Hello~
I am looking for a dog to train as a service dog. I was wondering, if you recived a letter from someone who was looking for a dog to train and asked if you would donate an older dog ( 6 months - 3 years) would you do it??? And if any body has asked you or written a letter to you how would you like them to word it so that youu would really think about do it???

Let me know!

PS: I am getting breeders names from the AKC. If you know anybody who breeds white Pulis or Komondors let me know.
Thanks!!! Jennnifer

As of right now! Most komondor or Puli puppies are around 1,000-1,500.00. and we do not have that kind of cash right now!

We have contacted Rescues. Nothing yet! Hopeing that a breeder will have a dog that was given back to them for 1 reason or another.

Both of those are "rare" type breeds, so I am not sure you are going to get a good breeder of either one to donate a dog to anyone. Also, neither of these breeds is best suited for that type of owrk. Komondors can be stand-offish and some even aggressive. They also require a ton of up keep. I really doubt that you are going to get a breeder to donate. Why don't you just BUY a puppy and train it?
Why these breeds? There are so many others that are suited to the work you want.

It doesn't have to be a purebred to be trained as a service dog. There are lots of dogs that are between 6 months and 3 years old in shelters and rescues that could make great service dogs and are very trainable. I think you should widen your search from white pulis and komodors, to any dog with the right size, and temperment. Why the strict breed preferences??? -that will likely be the reason you can't find what you are looking for for free.

Do you know how many dogs "Flunk" out of service training or are found to not have the right temperament after they begin, and never finnish?

I get calls and emails with different sob stories or reason why they want a dog for free-most of the time it's not just any dog either, They want the best looking dog of the litter, or a certain color(as if color matters), so I may sound jaded when I say this, but please don't take it the wrong way. When you ask for such specific dogs and colors, it looks to most breeders like you are just trying to get the dog you want with out paying, not loooking for the right dog to be trained for your needs.

I would never give a dog away for free, no matter the reason, unless I was sure I was donating it to a reputable group or foundation who was known for their work with service dogs.

I think it would depend. If you already had a dog and they really wanted it and you felt it was right, i guess it would be ok. But going out to buy a dog just for that is a litte out of the question. Thats a lot of moneyt donate. They will want you to get vet checked too. Thats about 200-1000 bucks for a purebred. Try a rescue instead.

I have received emails in the past from people wanting dogs donated for service dogs. As it turned out, they were just trying to get a free dog. I would need proof that you needed a service dog, and proof that you have a legitimate service dog trainer working w/ you and the dog. I would then have to evaluate the home and situation from there. No one seems to be able to provide that proof ..
