I had several bottles of prescription pain pills from various things that have happened over the past several years- I'm afraid to take pain pills, but they were always prescribed, so I always filled the prescriptions just in case I might need them, but I rarely did, leaving a basket on the top shelf in my bathroom with about 10 bottles all still full of pain medication.

I also keep bandaids and antibiotic ointment in the same basket because if I don't my kids get the bandaids out and waste them. They can't reach the basket, and that's a handy spot for me to remember where they are. I noticed when I went to get a bandaid a few weeks ago that some of the bottles had been opened- the pills spilled out into the bottom of the basket.

I didn't think much of it- figured they popped open when the basket got bumped or something. Today, I needed another bandaid- and the spilled out pills were all gone. I think my 16-year-old babysitter has been stealing them. I flushed the rest. Now what?

speak to her first and ask her about it and if there are any problems inform her parents about it coz she may be addicted to them and may be doing it in other homes where she babysits

I don't know.... unless you have some really good proof, I wouldn't go to her parents. If its even remotely possible she did NOT take them, that would be awful for her to be accused of that. Don't unless you are 100% sure.

That said - if you even remotely think she DID take them, stop using her as a babysitter immediately. And in the future, keep any medications, especially painkillers or presciption drugs, locked away somewhere. I'm not sure how old your kids are, but its just a matter of time before they figure out a way to reach them. Especially if there are bandaides with them, which may give them good incentive to try.

Good luck!

I say set her up! Put something that looks close to your old pills in the same bottle. Make sure it's something that is not harmfull. Like tick tacs or candy. Count how many you put in. When she figures out it's just candy she'll probably get nervous that you know and spill some again. Then tell her parents! But you need some kind of proff dealing with a situation like this.

before you blame the babysitter, be very sure none of your kids can get to it and that it's not your husband or another family member. but if you're positive it has to be her, i'd call her parents and just say in a very non-accusatory fashion you're not accusing her of anything and there may well be another explanation you aren't thinking of for the missing pills -- and that there's certainly no proof and you're not angry or anything, but that if you were her parents you would want to know just in case they need to keep a closer eye on her, so you're just letting them know. i certainly would want someone to tell me under the circumstances. then i'd get a new babysitter, or at least get rid of all alcohol and prescription pills and install a nanny-cam (and tell her about it ... it shouldn't be a trap to spy on her but just a deterrent and a way to check in that everything is going okay).

I would talk to my children to find out if they know anything about it, they may have seen the babystitter take them or something. Then I would talk with the sitter herself, not in an accusitory manner. Let her know that you were looking for them and couldn't find them. Look at the expression on her face and listen to what she has to say. You shouldn't jump to conclusions. Have other people been in your house???
How has the sitter been acting ? Has she been a good sitter? Has she stolen in the past? How long has she worked for you? How old are your kids? Could they have thrown them away?
Ask yourself these things and talk to her before you accuse or fire her.

Talk to her and find out. Maybe she set the basket down and let the kids doctor themselves(band aid wise). Then talk to the parents. And stop keeping unnecessary dangerous drugs in a house with small children.

I think you should call HER and tell her that she's fired for stealing pills from you. Basically teach her that in the real world, your parents don't punish you - life does.

If you think her parents would be upset that she's abusing pain medications, then you may want to let them know too, but I think you should talk to her directly first and tell her you're going to tell them.

I would confront her.

Tell her that your pills have been coming up missing.

ALTHOUGH before you do that

don't you think that if she WAS stealing, she would be a little more careful and neat then just letting them spill out everywhere.

don't jump to conclusions and ruin her life if you're not sure. or, get a nanny cam and see what's up.

Get some more pills set up a video camera and BUST her, then have her mom come over and watch the video and then find another baby sitter.
