I am a former chef from Canada and worked in a resort hotel in Digby NS Canada, the scallop fishing capital of the world. First the guy named Jason is dead wrong, and the other's are right, they are about 4-8 inches acrossed and a fished by dragging a rake like device behind the boat similarly like oysters, they are shucked on board the boats and the flash frozen or stored to sell them fresh.

Every August in Digby they have a Scallop Shucking Festival, they can range between the siaze of a silver dollar up to a X-large chicken egg, and I have seen some the size of a lemon, they are a mollusks like clams, oysters and mussels and have a hinged shell and a muscle that allow them to open and close to feed.

The shell you see in store are the same as those they come from, some restaurants will use them for effect for a dish called Couquilles St Jacques, scallops in a ceamy sauce with mushrooms, surrounded by duchess potatos, topped with cheese and broiled to brown. They are very verstile and have a sweet light flavour, I like them just sauted in butter, with a dash of garlic, lemon juice and a sprinkling of parsley.

yes, they are actually very beautiful. They have two shells like a clam, and around the rim of the shell they have tiny little incandescent blue or silver eyes! The part that you eat (little round white thingy) is actually just the muscle it uses to open and close its shell to swim. Check the photo.

Shell Oil used (uses?) the scallop as a symbol for years. missopinions provides the best picture of one I've ever seen.

A Scallop looks like a clam. I've seen some out there in santa monica beach in CA along the rocks. here's a link to some pics on yahoo http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.afn.org/~gofc/meat.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.afn.org/~gofc/Cleaning.html&h=320&w=320&sz=16&tbnid=V26tXJXHJKFKVM:&tbnh=118&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dscallop%26um%3D1&start=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=1

Here in Australia you can. They are shellfish, and come in a two piece shell, one side flat and the other side curved like a dome. they are the kind of shells that mermaids are often portrayed as wearing for a top.
Inside they are pretty much as you would serve them, whitish with an orange roe.

Scallops are shellfish, they come in a shell that is removed before going to market.
