The surface of my tongue has been tender for over a month now. What is the deal? I used to always brush my tongue when I brushed my teeth (did it for years) but now it's too tender to do that. When I run my teeth across my teeth, ouch! What in the world could cause this, and make it last this long?

there are many things that can be the cause:

burning tongue syndrome
hormone fluctuation
diet
vitamin deficiency
geographic tongue
medications
etc.....

i'd check with your dentist since it's been happening for over a month.

YOU COULD POSSIBLY HAVE WHAT IS CALLED GEOGRAFIC TONGUE, IT IS VERY COMMON AND CAN CAUSE PAIN,ESPICALLY WHEN YOU EAT CITRUS OF SPICY FOODS, SOMETIMES IT GOES AWAY ON IT'S OWN OTHERTIMES IT WILL LAST FOR A WHILE, NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT BUT STAY AWAY FROM MOUTHWASH THAT HAS ALCOHOL IN IT.

POSSIBLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE AN INFECTION. TRY STAYING OFF THE SALTY AND SPICY FOOD FOR A LITTLE BIT AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU'RE DENTIST. NOTHING BIG.
