What do you think of following response. I wanted job review also not only salary hike.
"This have been very hectic for me lately. We do not normally do formal job reviews, but we can sit down and talk soon (probably Friday). As far as a salary increase, we are not giving any raises the remainder of 2007. We need to finalize some year-end financial issues before we make any changes. We will be evaluating salaries the beginning of 2008."

The employer can evaluate salaries at the end of the year, the start of the next year, any other time, or never - that's their option, there is no requirement for raises.

It's good practice to do a review of employees at least annually, but there is no legal requirement to do one.. A good performance review does not necessarily result in a raise.

Some employers do salary raises once a year, irregardless of your hire date. Some employers do them on the employees anniversary. Sounds like your company is one that will do this at the beginning of the year as they are planning out their fiscal year for next year.

My company does the raises all annually every March. So if you are hired in February 2008, you won't get any kind of a raise in salary until March 2009.

It's up to you. I would do performance reviews on at least a yearly basis but only give a raise if you want to, can afford it, and the employee deserves one. Raises aren't required. The performance review is making sure the employee is doing what they're supposed to be doing and if they're doing it well. If they aren't performing as they should get rid of them but that doesn't mean you have to give employees with good reviews raises it means they get to continue their employment with you. However, raises are a good incentive for retention and they make for a happy work place. People can find other work if they're not appreciated just as you can find new employees if they're not a good fit for your company.
