i just bought a sony bravia home theater system with an upconverting dvd player, and i also bought a dynex hdmi digital a/v cable and hooked it up. i tried playing a dvd on my hdtv in 720p and 1080i settings and it all looks the same.....did i do something wrong? am i using the right cable, cuz the manual says to use a hdmi dvi in jack??but the guy at best buy said this is the cable i nee....help!!!

There is a saying "garbage in" 'garbage out".
Of course, DVD output is not garbage but its best resolution is 720x480.
Regardless who scales, the player or the TV, you can't make HD out of 480 lines. I am not surprised you can't see any difference. No matter what the input resolution (even 480i), the TV will scale to its native resolution, and I am sure Sony has a pretty good scaler.
If you want to see HD, buy an HD player.
