LOL considering the armaments on a typical pirate ship compaired to a navy ship its a total joke. Pirates are no real threat to the navy. If pirates ever start getting some big guns and subs and a very organized communication system and leadership wait then they would fall more into the catagory of a formal naval force then a pirate force.....
The US Coast Guard has also been known to stop pirates and the CG cutters by comparison to a navy ship have 1 needle shooter.

Pirates are not so much a threat to Navy ships, which are well armed. Terrorists with explosives are more of a threat because they don't plan on living beyond their attack.

Pirates are a real threat to civilian shipping. Due to some screwed-up maritime laws, civilian ships are not allowed to have armed crews. So, these laws disarm the good guys while pirates run around with all the firepower they want. Every year, ships and boats and yachts are taken by pirates and their crews are killed.

It is because they are armed that Navy ships and crews are not greatly endangered by pirates. Why can't we apply a little common sense and allow civilian ships to be armed too?

Not a huge threat, they have light weapons and small boats, but they are dangerous.

Yes there have been a number of incidents where the Navy had to engage Pirates off the coast of Africa. But being superior in technology and fire power the US navy has not lost one of those incidents yet. Mostly though the Pirates stick to attacking merchant ships and have attacked a few cruise ships.

If a pirate attacks a navy ship they seriously need to consider laying off the rum

Pirates are a common thread to merchants.
And some modern pirates are rather well
equipped. Fast small boats with machine
cannons and RPGs. They can be a thread
to coast guards or small patrol ships if they
underestimate their firepower.

Yes believe it or not. Pirate raids on US Navy vessels has been increasing every year since the turn of the century, they have actually managed to aquire a guided missile destroyer and light carrier.

And they still haven't caught that rascal Jack Sparrow yet.

While the attack on the USS Cole proved a small boat can do big damage they do not let them close any more. While dockside in San Francisco they keep a 100 yard area clear with 1 small gunboat for Frigates and 2 or more for larger ships.

I have seen what 20mm cannons can do. Not smart to mess with folks with big bullets.

That does not mean a moron won't try!
