the question i have to ask is why. do you hope to whiten your teeth with an abrasive or to kill germs?

baking soda is an abrasive, like salt, but not as rough on your teeth. you only need a little (1/4 teaspoon) on a wet brush, and be gentle, you can tear your gums if you are not careful. i keep it in a covered salt shaker so it stays dry and is easy to shake out.

the little bit of baking soda you use will not taste bad and you will be surprised at how "normal" your mouth tastes after you rinse.

an alternative to baking soda is hydrogen peroxide. pour the hydrogen peroxide into its cap and dip in you wet toothbrush and brush a section of teeth. you should only have to dip in four or five times and you will see the bubbles around your gums. that shows it is killing germs and the peroxide also whitens. because you use so little, it also does not have a really bad taste.

i use both, i use one in the morning and the other at night.
i just started this a few months ago and my gums are looking very healthy and my teeth are much, much whiter.

this, of course is cheaper than toothpaste, which sells itself with the same ingredients.

one more thing. i found the perfect dental floss. it is called "plackers" (don't get the other brand). it is strong, you don't have to put your fingers in your mouth to use it, and look for the one that has the double strands. it gets the food out from between your teeth much more effectively.

take care of your teeth. floss and rinse first and then brush gently but thoroughly. flossing gets rid of much of what is sticking to your teeth and between the gums so the brush can get in and clean the rest.

there is no reason to use salt.

good luck.

I've never heard of anyone brushing their teeth with salt, but I have heard of people rinsing their mouth out with salt water. I don't have a clue if it would be safe though. sorry.
