Your passport should be issued by your home country, so ask in your home country how to make sure your passport will be good then. Also, ask them if you need a visa. If you are coming rom Mexico or Canada (not from farther away by car) you shouldn't need a visa, but look into it just to make sure. People in the US are very paranoid right now.

You don't say where your coming from so its hard to say, passport definitely, maybe a visa depending on what your planning on doing and where your coming from. If your coming from and Communist country all you have to do is make it to American soil and say "I request political asylum" and they will bestow citizenship upon you. Some European countries you dont even need a visa as a tourist and any non communest latin countries you will need to jump though hoops to even cross the boarder.
Places you can try to get the information your need are US embassy, your own government, or a travel agent.

where are you coming from? i think you mean renew your visa, as passports are good for years. sounds like you need to plan little more.
