There are several good creams out now.
Emla is used in a lot of places, but it only
works for about 25-30 minutes. Most tats
take at least two hours, some larger tats,
or just the outlines, can take longer than that.
There is Lidocaine injection...but it causes
swelling and/or bleeding. There's really just
your ability to take it, if you want your tat to
come out right. Good Luck.....Ink On

There are lots of products you can use, different names depending on the country you live in, Xylocaine, Lidocaine, Lignocaine, Emla.
These products are designed to work for a short period of time only, 30 mins at a stretch, you may find the numbness great in the beginning, but when it wears off, the pain may then seem unbareable.
There is no evidence that the chemicals in these products effect the end, healed result, but really its best not to take the chance.
Be tough, getting your first large tattoo is a right of passage, deal with it!!
Good luck!

You didn't indicate whether this is before or after the puncturing ordeal begins, but, generally speaking, you should not apply any creams or other topical ointments, salves, etc, before the tattoo work is performed, as it can cause the ink to wash-off with the gunk rather than be absorbed into the skin, and, since most new tattoos are covered after the inking is done, you can't apply anything immediately afterward, anyway. Regardless, ask your tattooist, not strangers on the 'net, and, needless to say, ask your parents permission, before doing anything to your body (the mistakes you make now will haunt you the rest of your life).

they use lidocaine cream to numb the skin for laser hair removal. I also think there's a topical novacaine type spray that the dentist has used before they shove that giant needle way deep into your gums.
