Americans welcome our Canadian neighbors to vacation / holiday here. From another of your questions I gather that you plan to attend college in California. All you will need (beginning 2008) is a valid passport. Contact the "Student Affairs" department of the school you plan to attend, and they can give you detailed information about what is required of international students. You don't need a "reason" to visit, but if asked just tell the truth,IE: "I'm entering the U.S. to attend (the name of the college) in California".
We won't even get too mad at you if you leave some of those 5 cent pieces with the Beaver here, but not too many. When you say in your question, "without getting caught" ,it sounds like you're trying to do something illegal.

Are you asking about the need for passports for travel betweeen canada and the united States? Passports are currently needed to FLY between the u.S. and Canada...and any other nation. Passports will not be needed for LAND and SEA travel between Canada and the U.S. until after SUMMER 2008. See website below and read the top half of the page carefully for the CURRENT info. Another announcement will be made later giving the specific date. Until then, you need your certified birth certificate and a picture i.D. to cross the border.
