Newfoundlands shed a TON, trust me. You should see the tumbleweeds of Newfie fur around my home!

The idea that some dogs have hair and others have fur is a myth. It's all basically the same. It's true that some dogs more people aren't allergic to, but it's not because one is hair and the other is fur.

As others have said, Newfs shed a lot and they're not known for being good for people with allergies.

Since your sister is fine with your Cairn, I'd focus on dogs with a wire coat. Some larger breeds that might fit are the Airedale Terrier, German Wirehaired Pointer and Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. You could also look into the Standard Poodle and Irish Water Spaniel.

Don't go off and buy a dog just because someone said it was hypoallergenic. Sure, there are breeds that many people are not allergic to.

But there is NO breed that EVERYONE is not allergic to.

Find some breeds that you like that are generally considered good for people with allergies. Find a breeder or someone who has several of these dogs. Have your sister spend a few hours at their house to see if you’re allergic.

Puppies are often not as allergenic as older dogs and it would be tragic if your puppy grew up and you found out your sister is allergic and you had to get rid of it. Do your in-person (not online) research before getting a dog or you and your dog will be heartbroken if you have to get rid of it.

Don't get a mixed breed puppy. A dog whose parentage consists of two or more breeds could inherit characteristics from either parent. Just because she isn’t allergic to one dog of the same mix doesn't mean she won't be allergic to another. If you want a mixed breed, get it as an adult and spend some time with it to determine if she's allergic to it.

Good luck!

Here are a few lists of breeds that are generally low-shedding/hypoallergenic. Also check out dogs with wire coats. I have a friend who found a wire-coated breed that she’s not allergic to:

Go to the national breed clubs to find local breeders: http://www.akc.org/clubs/search/index.cfm?action=national&display=on

They can shed A LOT, and have more fur like fur then hair like fur then other breeds. Not the best choice for a larger breed for an allergy sufferer. You could look at a standard poodle, they are a more active breed, but many people find them far less of an allergy trigger. What ever breed you do choose, it may be wise for your sister to go to the breeders home with you so she can see how she does with her allergies around their dogs after some exposure just to be safe. She may also get some real good help from a doctor, as many allergies can be helped by medication and/injections. She might be able to get over her allergies, as many people find a medication that reduces or eliminates their symptoms, allowing you to pick any or more breeds.

Newfies will not work for you..

Other breeds (aside from the frankenmixes) would be a poodle, a schnauzer, a portuguese water dog, .. emm.. and I know there is at least one more, but I can't think of anything... (I'm blanking)

and as for the shedding.. I don't care what they are saying.. I've had schnauzers my whole life.. they DON'T shed.. the fur is more like hair than fur.. it knots up, but does not come off.. (so if you don't groom you end up with one big knotted dog).. and they are very good for people with allergies.. (my brother was deathly allergic to all other dogs)

if you have a cairn terrier and that works.. look for any other wire haired terrier and it should work as well..

um. All dogs have FUR. Plus your sister would be allergic to the DANDER and not the FUR.

Besides, newfoundlands shed a lot.

Newfies shed a lot, not only because of the thick hair but of the surface area it covers. Your sister is allergic to the dander, not the fur itself.

Serious Fur!!!! When I groom newfies it looks like a black blizzard hit the place. Everything is covered in fur when I work on them I couldn't imagine owning one and having to keep it up on a regular basis.
Aside from that they are super sweet dogs!

NO one is allergic to fur. They are allergic to saliva, or dander, but not fur.

That being said, there are only 2 dog breeds that grow "hair" instead of "fur" . Poodles and the new breed, Labradoodle. All other dogs have fur. Some breeds shed more than others.
