Rodents go through their estrus cycles about every 5 days - only when they are in estrus will they mate and that part of the cycle only lasts about a day.

You should know fairly quickly if she's pregnant since mice gestate for 20-21 days. Once she gets pregnant, you'll notice she gets bigger pretty soon.

It's almost impossible to pair up rodents and not have the female get pregnant - but the male could be shooting blanks. Have you ever mated the male before?

When I worked in a lab with a few breeding colonies of males rats/mice, sometimes the female just never got pregnant (even after 3 weeks of cohabitation). We tracked the males' records over time, and some never got a female pregnant so they were removed from the breeding colony.

Firstly some mice do not breed immediately they are paired, it may take them a month or more before they get down to it.

Gestation is around 21 days, but you should be able to see if the female is pregnant a while before this.

It is possible either your male or female is infertile. If they do not produce any pups in a couple of months you might want to consider repairing them with new animals.

How old are they? If they are over 2 months old, they should be breeding. In my experience, if you put a male and female mice together, 2 weeks later you have babies. Like clockwork.
Maybe they aren't a male and female. Or maybe one is infertile, though I've never run into this in mice.
I assume you have the standard pet store mice, not wild mice or a different species. Wild mice may have more trouble breeding in captivity.

I had a male and female together and it took a while before they started breeding. The gestation period is 22 to 24 days. They can have a litter size of 2 to 7. They are sexually mature within 1 year.
