It's Surah 4: 34 which permits husbands to beat their wives.

Other Muslims have already quoted the Surah and Ayah of Quran concerning the permission to beat a wife only on last resort when wife is doing very bad things.

Purpose of this last step is to keep the family together and not let it fall apart. Because always children are involved and they need both parents. For their sake every thing possible should be done to save the family.

Beating is allowed only very very light in the back or shoulder and never on face. And that should not leave any mark on her skin. Women have right to ask for divorce if husband is abusive and beats us more than religion allows and only if she has done any thing immoral. He can not beat her for any other reason. If he is abusive, every Judge or Clergy will grant her devorce. Often she doesn't ask for divorce for the sake of her children. Usually if she doesn't have a child, then she gets divorce and marrys some one else.

Lol, but what people forget to mention is that the object used to "beat" the wife is a twig no bigger than a toothbrush (called miswak, which is actually used as a natural toothbrush), and that the "beating" cannot leave a mark of any kind, nor cause suffering, nor can he touch the face.

Now, some people don't consider a tap with a toothbrush a beating. And try to imagine the scenario if you were fighting with your husband and he tapped your arm with a toothbrush. What's going to happen? Are you going to collapse hysterically laughing at the thought that he was going to 'put you in your place' with that? If so, by then you've forgotten what the fight is about and it's back to business as usual. Only you have that memory of when he made a fool of himself. :-P

I never knew it was okay to beat anyone, thank you for this question because now I know what the Quran is about.

I can't believe that anyone would want to control another person through force.... that is a sick thing and the marriage could never be a 'true' partnership of any kind.

it isn't that direct... a husband may beat his wife if she goes against his will, now that she is under his rules...or if the wife goes against the ways of Islam, it become the duty of the husband to set her straight be it any means possible...as long as she does not die prior to this... hope it helps, and hope you don'tt get beaten up by your hubby.

Qur'an 4:34

"Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them. Good women are obedient. They guard their unseen parts because God has guarded them. As for those from whom you fear disobedience, admonish them and send them to beds apart and beat them. Then if they obey you, take no further action against them. Surely God is high, supreme." (Dawood's version of the Koran, Quran, 4:34)

Don't have to read any book to learn that. If a man beats a woman when he doesn't get what he wants, he is not a man. He is a PUNK and he has NO backbone. You can tell him I said that.
