This link gives you a little bit of history on the bicycle and can give you an even better answer.

Today, the bicycle has evolved into a form of transportation.
A bike doesn't take up gas, it gives the rider exercise and is faster than walking or taking the bus in some cases.

We have more pollution and consumption problems than ever before so the bicycle has come out to be one of the most efficient ways of travelling around the city, to do grocery shopping, etc.

The first bikes started to appear during the Georian period. These were wooden affairs, with steel rims. They are similar to the childrens wooden strollers that you see in shops, that do not have peddles.

Several inventions followed, but it was not until the Penny farthing that a workable bike was available. As well as being a by product of the industrial revolution (We have the tech, so why not) it was originally a gentlemans toy. However, once the PF was developed, the reasons were the same as for todays cyclists. A good form of transport that helps with fitness. It is also considerably cheeper and a lot less work than a horse (Don't believe me, go down to your local stables and find out about the costs and effort of horse ownership).

If you look at the very oldest bikes on display in museums, it looks to me like they started as an amusement -- a wheeled curiousity, a toy. Eventual improvements changed the bicycle's role from toy to transportation. Now things have improved to the point that moving from point A to point B on a bicycle uses less energy than walking but gets you there faster than running. Given always increasing congestion, pollution, and cost of energy, some day the combination of mass transit and the bicycle may eclipse the automobile for personal transportation.

Like all inventions they were invented because someone decided they could provide a faster more fashionable means of travel that might make them rich. It was invented in 1763 but Starley's 1885 Rover is usually described as the first recognizably modern bicycle.

Because horses had to be fed and needed stables to be kept in. Bicycles were much simpler to look after and had no temperment. Later, the petrol engine would be fitted to the bicycle to create the motorcycle. Then some evil man invented the car based on that. Evil!

For a cheap, convenient way to get around faster without needing a self-powered vehicle which demands some sort of fuel or energy source. Bikes are easy to build, light, manoeuverable and relatively easy to learn how to use (if you're not afraid of taking a few falls. :P ) It's hard to think of a simpler vehicle that gives you as much mobility and speed as a bike at such a low cost, and it hardly needs maintenance if compared with other vehicles or machines.

I say this even though I am a lousy bike rider. :P

People wanted something that was quicker than walking, easier and cheaper to look after than a horse.
