I agree with free.
People who don't know how to adapt to and follow the local 'rules'' are the ones making it dangerous for the rest of us.

If seeing dead people on or along the streets upsets your stomach, then don't go to Africa.

They are not bad drivers.
Its just that from a westerner's point of veiw driving in Thailand takes some getting used to. For example they have no concept of road rage, If you come up to a crest of a hill and are confronted with a humungus bus passing an equelly humungus truck, right in front of you They expect you will get out of the way. Where as in the West a motorist would get angry, here they take it in their stride,, You will never hear a horn honked at you in anger but just to say hello.
Motor cyclists will pull out to turn left with out looking expecting any vehiclels will be driving in the centre of the road rather than on the left, and so they will have plenty of room. Lines on the are just a vague guide ,as are stop signs etc.... Mostly if you see an overtuned truck it will be because it was ridiculously overloaded..
I enjoy driving in Thailand..

Well, it depends on what you mean by bad.

They're not bad in terms of being able to handle their car etc. But they are risk takers (driving really fast, and following 2 inches behind the car in front of them etc.) which some would consider 'bad'.

If you ever want to know what it's like to have a near death experience, hire a motorcycle taxi during rush hour.

As scary as it is, I have to admit those guys are pretty skilled.

Interestingly enough, no matter how aggressive the driver, or close the call to getting hit, they don't honk at each other. After all, you wouldn't want someone to lose face, now would you?

I agree with twelve.

I don't think they are "bad". They just drive more aggressively there.
Traffic in Thailand - or more so in Bangkok, is not like in the western world. I have been in traffic in Thailand and as much as it can be scary at first, I have never been in ANY accidents not even a bump and scratch with others vehicles - although I have seen a few accidents. Even then, it was amazingly few considering the amount of cars on the road.

Being aggressive, driving dangerously is bad driving, even if you have control of your car 99.99% of the time - - I do alot of HWY driving and there are always trucks turned over along the side of the road - - motorcycles, especially upcountry are the worst as they tend, as do the cars, not to look when they pull out... lanes are a vague concept - not only on hwy but if you want to make a turn off the hwy, someone might be sitting in your lane, blocking your ability to turn - - the figure I have heard was 3 traffic deaths per hour.. - -

YES, YES, YES, YES,YES, YES, YES, YES,YES

agree with what spanky said, i have seen the same on the hwy. i will find at least 2 trucks or pickups in ditches along the side of the road per day. once seen a blanket over what was a body with a motorcycle on it's side and blood and body parts all over the road. it should make you think twice. don't know if they kill more soi dogs or motorcyclists per day.

to African farmer local rules are not local laws, they have laws and should follow them for the safety of all. as for African i have no places of going there.

no , Always ask to go on the Meter, do not take the ones that offer you a flat rate, if they say 300 baht, by the meter it would be 120 baht. I always found the drivers that go by the meter as friendly and honest.

I HAVE TRAVELLED MANY THOUSANDS OF KILOMETRES IN THAILAND ON PUBLIC AND PRIVATE TRANSPORT AND NEVER WITNESSED AN ACCIDENT HAPPENING, BUT HAVE SEEN MANY TRUCKS ALONG THE HIGHWAY THAT HAVE BEEN INVOLVED, I GUESS ITS THE LONG DIDTANCES THEY DRIVE AND FALL ASLEEP. BANGKOK CITY TRAFFIC IS ORGANISED CHAOS AND DRIVERS ARE USED TO IT UNLIKE WESTERN COUNTRIES,BUT I`VE NEVER SEEN ACCIDENTS HAPPEN THERE
