Most philanthropists sponsor scholarships and you can apply for them at your school. Part of the application is an essay. They usually want to know what you will be doing with your education after graduation. Anything that will help others or make the world a better place usually gets attention. I received one because I wanted to use my education to start a firm that would inprove the quality of life for older adults - and I did.

Interesting question, but I guess if you have a ton of money and want to actually use it to do good, why not pay for someone to go to college? So, my first answer would be "out of the goodness of their hearts."

Secondly, they may see it as a way to improve society. Education, even at the individual level, has the ability to improve the life of not only that individual, but potentially the lives of others (if she becomes a teacher or a doctor). In addition, some people who would be very successful in college and potentially help many others, are not able to attend as a result of financial or other barriers.

Finally, some people probably like the name recognition and positive PR they get by having their name associated with a scholarship. They may also see it as leaving a legacy behind (so they're not forgotten) and may even get a tax write-off. These are much more selfish reasons, but likely really do come into a philanthropist's thinking.
