it amazes me that people will say that spiritually we are made in 'his' image, yet they will still refer to god as him - does a spirit have genitals then?

Man was made in the image of God, not God in the image of man. I had to write an essay about that question and this is one of the paragraphs
Man was made in the image of God. He has two parts, the material and immaterial. The material part is his ‘earthly house’. His arms, legs, eyes, nose, and so on. The immaterial part of him is his heart, soul, spirit, intellect and will. The material part of man is often discussed and studied but the immaterial part is rarely even mentioned. It is what makes someone’s personality, their emotions and their ability to act with in certain capacity limits. Because man posses an immaterial part, God placed him above the animals and every living and non living thing on the earth. Even with this high position on earth he is still lower then the smallest heavenly being. The Lord stoops down to make him great.
so that is what I think... :]

Image does not strictly refer to the physical form. Man has characteristics that reflect God the father. No, He is not in physical form chilling on a cloud really high up somewhere. This much I know. But God is real. And He really loves us.

Yes but in Transcendental, Spiritual way.
We and the Material World are but a perverted reflection...All living beings are an infinitesimal spark of God..contaminated by contact with matter and covered by illusion about who we are.
The Spiritual world and abode of God is a little bit similar to a Parallel Universe....But not Material..
You can only really understand when you die and go to that place...
but more likely be reborn to continue the endless cycle of birth, old age, disease and death..Until you figure it out.
You need to qualify you see..Have a good Karmic Score.

God is a spirit, so obviously he does not have physical things like lungs, nor does he need air.
Being in God's "image" implies that we share some of his personal attributes such as, we can be moral, we can reason, we can love, we can be creative, etc.
I think that you knew this already, and that you are just trying to be silly.

We have His image or qualities rather than form. God is a spirit without physical form. We are too frail a form but made perfectly for the earth.

God is spirit...You cannot see spirit.....the only way we can see God is through Jesus...Jesus was God in the flesh.....he walked among men....
God created this world wtih his breath..God breathed the world into existance....his breath is life. The very breath in your body was given to you by God....

Naive question...to be created in God's image means that we have the capacity to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit, reflecting the love of God to others.
It has little to do with appearances.

If you actually thought about that concept MAN IN HIS/HER/ITS OWN IMAGE than the world would be a far better place. Unfortunately, many folks don't believe that...I for one believe that if there is in fact a God than he/she/it lives in bits and pieces in all of us...hence the need to respect and care for one another instead of fighting over what to believe. PEACE!
