We hope to have the vows exchanged on the beach, this January, with just the celebrant, us and witnesses. we don't mind toque, glove and long-john-ing it. I was just wondering if anybody else had any other fun ideas.

bests!

it snows in RI, the average temperature in January is 19 degrees F (-8 degrees C)

I was thinking knee length dress/boots..

..a very casual ceremony. An alternative would have been mountain top exchange in Vermont, or in a field in the Quebec wilderness, both would have been very difficult to get the officiant to.

If it was me, I would still want to do a take on the white dress. I would probably wear a simple white dress (maybe a sweater dress), with a white wool coat (knee or calf length). Definitely boots (knee height?) (I live in Boston, and no matter how short the ceremony is, you need to be comfortable). I would also hold some sort of evergreen bouquet. Green would look so pretty against the white wool coat.
Make sure no matter what that someone takes pictures, it sounds beautiful!

Here is another cold idea. Since you were thinking of a mountain top in Vermont, how about this...

http://www.cathedralofthepines.org/ It's in New Hampshire - just north of the Massachusetts border. I went to a wedding there this spring and it was gorgeous. I can only imagine what it looks like when it is covered in snow.

As for what you want to wear, how about a beautiful dress or a white/ivory pants suit with a fur wrap/coat, and fur muffler. (it can be fake fur to cut down on cost and to be sensitive to all the little critters) Underneath the dress you can wear long johns and boots and no one will notice! He can wear a nice suit, but again I would probably go with the thermal underwear underneath. Not very sexy, but it will be freakin cold out. As a joke you could paint with fabric paint on your long johns a bra top and thong.

I like the other persons suggestion of a wool coat.

I don't want to be too much of a downer here, but it really sounds frigid (I'm in NJ so I have an idea of what RI will be like).
Is there a reason it is so vital to marry outside on the beach in one of the coldest months of the year?
Couldn't you find somewhere indoors that overlooks the beach? I worry about your officiant & witnessess - they are going to be awfully cold.

I imagine it will be quite cold in January. Maybe you can wear a fur lined cape over the dress/gown or your choice, and he can wear a nice suit with thermals underneath it?

Does it snow in Rhode Island? Maybe you can do the "snow princess" thing.

Sounds cold. Maybe a heavy wool suit for him and a dress for you along with a full length dressy coat. I have not looked into it but I know that I have seen coats that go with bridal gowns, both short ones and long ones.

you could still have like a nice wedding dress and a tux, but i would make you you have a nice jacket to go over the dress because the beach in january in maryland is usually pretty cold. good luck =]
