Heaven....
The dwelling place of Jehovah God and of faithful spirit creatures; a realm invisible to human eyes. The Bible also uses the term “heaven(s)” in a variety of other senses; for example: to represent God himself, his organization of faithful spirit creatures, a position of divine favor, the physical universe apart from the earth, the expanse surrounding planet Earth, human governments under Satan’s domination, and the righteous new heavenly government in which Jesus Christ with his joint heirs are empowered by Jehovah to rule.
Hell....
The word “hell” is found in many Bible translations. In the same verses other translations read “the grave,” “the world of the dead,” and so forth. Other Bibles simply transliterate the original-language words that are sometimes rendered “hell”; that is, they express them with the letters of our alphabet but leave the words untranslated. What are those words? The Hebrew she’ohl′ and its Greek equivalent hai′des, which refer, not to an individual burial place, but to the common grave of dead mankind; also the Greek ge′enna, which is used as a symbol of eternal destruction. However, both in Christendom and in many non-Christian religions it is taught that hell is a place inhabited by demons and where the wicked, after death, are punished (and some believe that this is with torment).

Allegorical representations of how you conduct your life in the PRESENT. Developed as a risk and reward system by the ruling classes in the Dark Ages to CONTROL the peasant class. Gave them a modicum of hope that something better than their pathetic existence would be available if they followed the rules and held out a means of punishment if they didn't. Live your life in the here and now respecting our earth and others, loving those closest to you and you'll enjoy HEAVEN on EARTH. Live hatefully and disrespectfully and enjoy the punishment of your conscious and possibly the secular authority assuming you get caught--IN HELL. PEACE!

They form a Manichean dichotomy, just like evil and good, sin and redemption, Satan and God - all opposing forces that represent dualistic truth in the "paternalistic" or "supernatural" religions. As a follower of "maternalistic" or "natural" beliefs, I reject these concepts as oversimplifications, although in Zen, we use Yin and Yang to symbolize other dichotomies.

primo forgot to add "riegan" to the beginning of his heaven list :P
if i believed they existed, i would go with the stereotypical veiw. heaven has the angels like the ones on the phily cream cheese commercials, and hell has the horny red guy
edit: gee primo, that would be like having heaven and hell at the same time! are you sure you could handle that?
edit: oh, i assure you, primo's thoughts of me in my devil fairy costume are anything but boring
