He didn't survive it. It was the result of a stupid accident. At least officially.

There are several theories about this. An exotic one is that a little dragon is bound to be destroyed when it messes around with big dragons. Bruce was born in 1940, a year of the dragon on the Chinese calendar, and also in the hour of the dragon. His name at birth was Lee Jun-Faan, but he was billed as Lee Sai-Lung (Little Dragon Lee) in Hong Kong films. Another theory is that he was given Dim Hseuh (Death Touch) for offending someone who was the wrong one to offend. It may be due to teaching non-Chinese men martial arts, or it may be for just being such an egotistical baby. Another wild tale is that he had most or all of his perspiration glands removed in his armpits, and that caused him to overheat. This makes no sense, for he had been lying in bed some time when he died. The autopsy showed his brain was swollen and had burst many blood vessels. Some believe that was an extreme allergic reaction to using marijuana and taking an Equagesic pill. Both were found in his body. A doctor who had treated Bruce regularly said he often had seizures of some sort. He had complained of a headache after discussing his movie with Raymond Chow at the flat of Betty Ting Pei. She gave him the pill, and he laid down on her bed. Some time later, he could not be awakened and was DOA at the hospital.

No one really knows for sure, the best thing I have ever read on the subject is Unsettled Matters by Tom Bleecker. you can read the entire thing online here:
http://www.sanjosekenpo.com/UNSETTLEDMATTERS.pdf
or just scroll down to the bottom where the subject of his death is discussed.
When the book came out it created a lot of controversy from people who consider Bruce Lee a god, so the author offered several thousand dollars to whoever can prove anything he says wrong and everyone quit talking, the offer still stands, all of what he reports can be verified by witnesses or direct evidence, so it is in fact a very reliable source.

"The facts of the case are this: Lee died after falling into a coma. The coroner's report was inconclusive, and medical authorities came up with five reasons for Lee's untimely death. However, they all agreed that it was caused by a cerebral edema (a swelling of the brain caused by a congestion of fluid). But what caused the edema became a matter of speculation. For the most part, the course of events on that fateful July day in 1973 can be pieced together. According to Lee's wife, Linda, Bruce met film producer Raymond Chow at 2 p.m. at home to discuss the making of Game of Death. They worked until 4 p.m., and then drove together to the home of Betty Tingpei, a Taiwanese actress who was to also have a leading role in the film. The three went over the script at Tingpei's home, and then Chow left to attend a dinner meeting. "

Bruce Lee. I probably wasn't even born when he died, but I still mourn for him. He's an inspiration, really. He died, actually after falling into a coma. It was a cerebral edema. He had complained of a headache to his costar when they were rehersing for the next movie. She gave him some tea and painkillers and it was recorded that he took a nap on the sofa in her family room while she rehersed alone. It was concluded that Bruce Lee died to a Brain Edema, and he died in his sleep. He was put to rest in the same uniform that he wore in oneof his movies, probably Enter the Dragon since it was one of the more popular ones. I must say that Bruce Lee was a great person, and both him and his son will be remembered in my family. I'm deciding now to pass on his movies and legends to my children, and them to theirs and so on.

There are many theories. Some say he died of a cerebral edema, others from a curse on the family, from cannibus, some even think he was murdered by the Triad society.

I think the offical cause of death was cerebral edema.

He died from a blunt instrument trauma to the head. The autopsy found marijuana in his system.

Bruce Lee was an arrogant party animal who got whacked when he was high.

FINALLY I GET TO ANSWER THIS Question!!

I was a student of Wong Jack Man, the famous Kung Fu stylist that Bruce Lee fought.I have learned Northern Shaolin, and Xingyiquan for 23 years under honorable master Wong Jack Man.

He told me (and the 4 others who studied under him to the highest level including Rick Wing who has taken over his schools) in no uncertain terms that during his fight with Lee he had executed a Dim Mak strike in hopes of ending the fight early and decisively. This was the Hanto Senkin strike which affects brain function.

However, Bruce Lee's natural talent and abilities to utilize and manipulate Chi prevented this strike from working as intended, and it was delayed for many years.

The Hanto Senkin strike is a direct attack through the Vagus Nerve, and by holding it off via Chi mastery it only delays it. It is said that this strike can remain with an individual for many many years, killing them later on.

The Equaseic tablet Bruce took drugged him, and by doing so dulled his ability to control Chi, and he died in his sleep from the swelling that the Hanto Senkin strike caused.

MANY people will try to refute this, and this has NEVER been uttered before. It was told to me in utter secresy, and I had swore only to reveal it when it becomes absolutely necessary to clear up the mystery and once the statue of limitations passed on a manslaughter charge.

As of November 15th of this year, the statue of limitations for manslaughter in California has passed. I have been biding my time to find the proper forum to unleash this devastating secret. I have done so only with permission of Sifu Wong, who retired in 2005, and removed himself from the public after carrying this guilt with him for 34 years. He said he knew the second he heard the news what had happened.

However he had since hoped that Bruce had completely defeated the strike, and expelled the negative energy from his body.

No coroner's report will be conclusive, because this was a Chi strike used by ancient assasins, developed to be nearly untraceable.

Had a Xingyquan or Chinese medicine practioner taken a look at the body they would have noted the 3 dark marks underneath the 4th rib, and if they were familiar with the strike would have easily been able to ascertain as to the cause of death, though they may not have known who exactly initiated the Hanto Senkin strike.

My master apologizes greatly, he is racked with guilt and is now a recluse due to what he has taken from the world in one action of hot temperedness and pride. To this day he has never shown this strike to anyone, and refuses to even mention it aside from this one occassion upon his retirement and seclusion. He felt he could not die until the world had known.

Hopefully he will gain some peace in knowing that the mystery is no longer out there. I have contacted the editors if Inside Kung Fu, and Blackbelt, to let them know the true story of this so that this long debated mystery can finally be laid to rest.

Peace be with you all, and realize that Martial Arts can be deadly, even with the most precise practioners, accidents can happen.
