same reason God told christian women to cover their heair. in the bible it says women must cover her head if she does not it is a shame upon her and she might as well shave all her hair off if she doesnt want to cover it. .. God protects women by covering women arent harassed like non covering women. i have not once been hit on ,followed, whistled at, all men who pass me lower their eyes since i became muslim. when i was not covered i was followed and men tried to say rude comments and whistle at me. God knows women are beautiful so by telling them to cover it it keeps men from thinking lustful thoughts about her, protects her modesty and allows her to be respected and known for her mind and heart not her looks

It's just another vision of modesty which is worn on the outside of the body.... the rest is within the mind and behaves in a modest way. While I believe the concept of an omnipotent creator being is illogical, I can understand the concept of dressing a certain way so as not to distract certain audiences in various places. Hijab, or the head covering by some very Catholic women (and other religions) is merely an outward sign, and personally it certainly saves women from having to worry about bad hair days and what others might be thinking of them.
Frankly I think it's cool. Sometimes it gets distracting to worry about about what you look like, which is pointless in the long run since we all die and our bodies are impermanent. It's far nicer, IMO as a Buddhist, to spend more time on doing virtuous deeds (when I can, am not saying I'm perfect... I'm oh so far from it! LOL) and not worry about what people think about my make-up, hair etc. so I don't wear make-up, and I wear only a mohawk because when I took it all to the skin people thought I was a chemo patient and were giving me sympathy I was not worthy of, nor in need of, and I'm also not mistaken for the Buddhist nuns of the Sangha.

To preserve their modesty and so the women are not viewed or looked upon as sex objects. The Bible also says that women can have long hair as long as they cover their heads and that the women should pray with their heads covered otherwise God will not accept their prayers and they should shave their hair off.

The veil is not exclusive to Islam or Judaism, it appears in christianity too, haven't you seen nuns before?
the veil represents purity, chastity and modesty. in islam is required, In judaism is required in orthodoxy and in synagogues, In christianity is required as part of religios vows and in very traditional instances, at the masses and divine liturgy (which is no longer observed by almost anybody, but it doesn't mean that is abolished)
In islam, the veil is required for women because they are reserved only for their husbands, and they are not supposed to incite sexual desire on other men.
What God demands of a woman, and of men as well is purity and chastity. How you get to get this observed is open I guess. So veils are a way to observe this.
How do we westeners and christians observe this? We should ask ourselves that.

Because of a certain thing we call modesty, it causes men to approach them with respect, it prevents rape and helps calm the lustful desires of men. Guys, check out a girl with her hair done and showing with a nice skirt on, and then check out a woman with her hair and body covered, see the difference?

God as a loving Father is concerned about the safety of his daughters, so he comanded them to cover up not only their head but to wear long skirts so they would be less temptation to evil men.
In other words veils are both a sign of faith and protection for women.

I like the way your questions progress. First, why do men have to show their beards, but women hide their hair? After all, they were both given by God.
And if God made women inferior creatures, why are they equal in mind? (He who answers that women do have inferior minds has never spoken to a true woman.)

Modesty. A woman's hair is considered her 'glory' and is for the eyes of her husband only.
