Conscription is mandatory military service. Several countries, such as France, Germany, and Israel have conscript armys.
When able-bodied males and/or females reach adulthood, they are require to undergo military evaluation and possibly training. In France, it's for one year. There are some factors that are used to preclude people from conscription, such as college and professional training. (i.e. Medical School) but they sometimes serve also.

The United States has an all-volunteer force, but can start a "draft" in time of war if need be.

Thanks, at first the question really confused me.

definition: Conscription. Compulsory enrollment and induction into military service; drafted.

definition: Compulsion. Constraint; objective necessity; duress. Forcible inducement to the commission of an act. “That act of compelling or the state of being compelled;”

What is the definition for an individual that had the calling; a compelling drive to serve their country, a compulsion to freely enlist?

Our Constitution says that we will maintain a military representing a cross section of the population. That can't be done without the draft. That said, women and slaves were not part of the population, having no vote. However, white men had extra votes depending on how many slaves he owned. Having a wife didn't count. From what I've heard, that part of the constitution has not been amended.
