80Gb is the best bet if you plan to play PS2 games because the 40Gb is not backward compatible with not some but all PS2 games. That is why the price is lower and it has only 2 USB ports instead of the 4 USB ports. Bottom line I have had my PS3 almost a year and its main uses over that time have been to play blu-ray movies. This is not to stray you away from buying the system it has only been a tough year losing exclusive title licenses such as Assassin's Creed though 2008 is looking very promising so far since PS3 sales are up 200%.

Quick Notes:

- 40Gb $399 2 USB ports, no backward compatibility for PS2 games/ free Spiderman 3 blu-ray movie packaged inside

- 80Gb $499 4 USB ports, backward compatibility on all PS2 games old and new/ plus free PS3 Motorstorm game packaged already inside.

quick note 2:
All PS3 systems bought at Best Buy come with 5 free blu-ray movies via mail-in-rebate.

Go with the 80Gb and have fun

Okay, the 40 GB is $399, and the 80 GB is $499. That's twice the hard drive space for 20% more. That's a deal in itself. I just got the 80 GB on Saturday and I'm sure I will be upgrading one day. That's because, if you're like me, you won't let go of anything even if you KNOW you won't be utilizing it. Well that takes up space. Plus what about the free game demos? You know you want to download some. Not sure how much space they take up though. But if you have a spare computer hard drive, it is probably compatible with the PS3. Then you should get the 40 GB.

EDIT: The 5 free Blu-Ray movies can be redeemed where ever you get your 40 or 80 GB PS3. It's a mail in offer, and you must choose from a crappy list(Opinion). I got my 80 GB PS3 at Wal-Mart, and for the day I got it only, they were having a secret sale that I found out about at psu.com for whoever bought a 80GB PS3, they would get 10 free Blu-Ray movies OF THEIR CHOICE, in additioned to the aforementioned 5 free. I am telling you this because there is supposed to be more secret sales to come. Be on the lookout. Peace!

My husband says the 40GB won't play some of the Ps2 games.

1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB versio, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
