Hi. Okay, some of these answers are downright silly.
I'm a Chemical Operations Specialist in the Army - gas masks are my forte.
If he wants a gas mask, you'll need to look for one with replaceable filters that are NOT made with charcoal (turns out that's toxic).
It needs to have adjustable headstraps - at least six of them, preferably eight.
Contrary to other answers, filters are good for more than a few hours - if they're being used, it depends on what kind of chemical you're subjected to how long they will last.
There are military-grade masks that you can get at a surplus store - the M40A1 is the one the Army currently uses. There's a M40A2 that's a little better, but it may be difficult to find. Technically it's called a protective mask - so if you ask for a M40A1 or A2 pro-mask, someone selling them will know what you're talking about.
Make sure he knows that these masks won't protect against certain things. Tear gas, yes; chlorine NO. If the particles of the chemical are too small, they'll sneak right through any filter. Regular filters WILL protect against VX gases, Sarin, and other toxic nerve agents; just make sure he knows that some things that are lethal can't be protected by any filter that a civilian is going to get their hands on - in fact most of the Army can't get their hands on things like that.
Good luck!

Depending on the age of your kid brother keep in mind, buying a second-hand mask has its dangers, the surplus WW2 type and the modern 1970,90s Russian Eastern Block types (full rubber hood style) often can have an asbestos filter with them with time these are still dangerous as there is a chance for asbestoses contamination to get into the lungs and cause cancer!!!
Some military surplus sell unused gas masks, check that the metal screw cap is still on the bottom of the filter with a wax seal and the rubber plug is in the front of the filter again with a seal.

The M40A1 is one of the best. most people will try and sell you an M40.
M40 has black rubber nosecup. M40A1 has improved green rubber nosecup. The nosecup in the M40 was too small and pinched peoples nosies. Also make sure it as these parts eye lenses cover "clear ad black", water proof bag, canister, Mask carrier, ans second skin.
Know the XM50 JSGPM mask is the newest but it is not fully used in the military yet. I do not think you will be able to buy it yet but it is a lot better than the M40A1.

It's not really which mask is better, it is the importance of knowing how to properly use one. You don't just put it on like a hat, there is a lot that goes into the proper use and care.

There are other options besides E-Bay available. One listed just below.
Do a websearch for "gas masks" and you will see what's available at a reasonable cost.

Seems more like a nut job. The freak that did this was 24 years old, and most likely isn't even that involved in politics. Dude wanted to be the Scarecrow or some other wakadoo idea!

It is pretty pointless to purchase a gas mask other than for decore. If he is wanting one for use, do not bother. Unless he has it fitted and a fresh supply of filters, it will do him no good if he ever needs to use it. Plus, even if he does have it fitted and has filters (new not old, old will be no good) they are only good for a few hours.
