In 2005, George W. Bush said "On the other hand, I don't see how you can be president at least from my perspective, how you can be president, without a relationship with the Lord."

You mean can't because he or she would never be voted in? Or can't because he or she would be unqualified?
[edit] Who believes that an atheist can't be president in that respect?

I wouldn't say the president couldn't be an atheist but I would say that they would have to be private about it, this country is not to the point where it will elect somebody with non traditional ideas....if you have something about you that is considered non traditional by the general population you can't be out there with it and expect the people to vote you in because sadly it won't happen.
So who is the person who believes this that might surprise us?

Lincoln was an atheist.
Those days have gone.
"I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God."
(George Bush Senior)
There are some states in the US where an atheist is barred from running for public office.

I believe that since America was founded on the concept of God, people would most likely never vote an atheist into office although stranger things have happened...Bush claims to be Christain and look what he has done to our country

Well I don't think that you could openly admit it.
But there are possibilities from the past. Lincoln wrote an anti-religious book when he was younger. He destroyed it at the advice of a friend who told him it would end his political career. His wife said things after he died that indicate he could have been one. He always walked a line because his major allies were religious, so he used their rhetoric. It is hard to really know.

personally, I think that the only safe way to get a president with the will of the people in mind and to better run the country, is to require that the president be an atheist.
that way we legislate according to the needs of the country, not the needs of a deluded crackpot who speaks to god everynight after sniffing the poo stains on his underwear for a high.

If a President ran for office while clearly stating he is an Atheist he probably would not win the office in our current culture. Our culture is dominated by theistic belief.

I will vote for the person I believe is closest to my own views on all things important like iraq, healthcare, education, respect for the Constitution and religious freedom, and good living wages for all people. Among other things.

I think that the president of the US should be an atheist. They would have no religious agenda weighing them down and would be able to concentrate on running the country well.

The President can be whatever the Hel he/she/ze (hey who says a trannie can't be President) wants to be. I don't care what religion or lack thereof they follow. As long as they do their job and don't get us into another war.
