You're right....the establishment clause of the first amendment would have to be repealed in order to clear the way for the US to become a theocracy. However, as there is absolutely no support for such an idea, much less 2/3 of the house and senate and 3/4 of the state legislatures, one need not worry about such an occurrence as long aas the Constitution is in force.

In order for the US to become a theocracy a defender of the faith requirement would have to be added somewhere . Use the coronation of kings as your model for how that happens . The problem is that you would not be amending an amendment but rather the body of the Constitution and there is no way in Hell that the American people would ever allow that to happen so relax

The constitution could be ammended to become a Theocracy. However, it will never happen.
The US does not have an official religion. Since Christianity is a group of religions -- and not a religion itself, it would be impossible to make it the official religion. The US does NOT have an official language.

For one thing the Constitution forms the government is no democracy. It is a republic. That means people appoint a smaller group to represent them, to decide for them. That is far away from a theocracy as anyone can get.

"Where then does America, as a nation based on law, draw the legal line regarding religion? The words of the Constitution are not meaningless. They were debated and deliberately chosen for the purpose of giving order and stability to civil society. No two clauses of the First Amendment were given more consideration by the First Congress than the two religion clauses. The Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause are not in conflict--one does not contradict the other in regard to the principle of the supremacy of civil law. America is not a theocracy. The first clause in the Bill of Rights plainly says that “religion” is not to be established by law--religion is not be established as law. The new world of the United States of America separated itself from the old world and its history of legalized religious tyranny. In America religion is not to rule.
So, what happens in the United States of America when a church or church organization claims it can do whatever it pleases in the name of religion because it calls itself a religious organization and distorts the significance of the Free Exercise Clause as if it guaranteed any action constitutional protection? Well, what should happen is that such organizations should be corrected and reeducated as to a proper understanding of the Free Exercise Clause and the Constitution. "

Those rights described in the Bill of Rights. They may disappear the document, but those rights are WAAAY to hard to deny ALL the Americans that would oppose a Theocracy.

Article 6... The constitution itself is the primary basis of U.S. government and law... unlike Article 6 of the old Soviet constitution which stated that the communist party was its primary basis. The constitution is not an easy thing to change, but it can be changed when it is needed.
A so-called "theocracy" is in fact a dictatorship since the TRUE basis is not divine, but someone's PERCEPTION of that divine will.

When the US adopts an official religion, a state religion, then the real problems will begin.
I don't believe this will ever happen.
The US does not have an official religion, or language.

The European Pope. The European Pope is holding out until Christians (aka Protestants) renounce their belief that marriage between men and women is good vs accept the European belief that only unmarried monks and unmarried nuns go to heaven (European Pope's belief).
