I asked earlier about homosexuality and there was no place in the bible that talked about it. How about abortion? Is this another "My minister tell me it's thar so I believes him" or is there a passage somewhere that talks about it.

Killing is wrong. So then no death penalty, right?

2007-11-27 09:11:09 · update #2

Well, abortion is not defined as murder except by christians. So, where in the bible does it say anything about removing fetuses? Where does it say THAT?

Gee, all the passages that talk about homosexuality that you guys mention could very easily be interpreted differently. Where does it specifically say, without possible interpretation, that it's bad?

Cuchlain -- I've never had a bible that uses the term homosexuality before. Can you site publisher and date so I can go look at it??

The issue comes down to at what point life begins. If one accepts the religious proposition that life begins at conception, then abortion is murder. If one believes that life is more of a "viability" issue, then first trimester abortions are not murder, as one is not killing a viable human being.

In the beginning, there is no brain, heart, lungs, etc...

Interestingly, the religious argument could be attenuated to the point that masterbation becomes a crime, as one is destroying "potential" human beings...

First of all, there are plenty of verses in the bible that condemn homosexuality, so let me give you a couple to start. Then I'll give you the verses regarding what to do with abortion:
1 Corinthians 6:9 NIV
"Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor HOMOSEXUAL offenders"

Levituicus 18:22 NIV
"'Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable"

Some verses used to oppose abortion do not specifically use the word abortion, but condemn what is done in abortion. Meaning, it is wrong to kill innocent babies, and nobody has this right since all human beings belong to God. In fact, it is our obligation to do something about people who do such harm:

Isaiah 44:24 “This is what the LORD says - "your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb”
Ezekiel 18:2-4 For every living soul belongs to Me, the father as well as the son - both alike belong to Me.
Exodus 20:1, 13 -- 6th commandment:…"You shall not murder."
Jeremiah 22:3 Do no wrong or violence…and do not shed innocent blood.
Deu 27:25 "Cursed is the man who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person."
Isa 1:17 Seek justice…Defend the cause of the fatherless,
Pro 31:8"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
Pro 24:11-12 “Rescue those being led away to death

To name a few.

You could probably find something on homosexuality (search on 'reprobate mind' in a KJV concordance), but the abortion evidence is much more sketchy. There was a bible story where a woman knew soon after conception that she was going to have a great child, but I don't remember who or what the story was exactly. I asked someone the same question (as someone who places his faith in the Bible rather than in churches), because if there was really anything in the Bible against it, my political opinion may be swayed. After checking it out, I decided there wasn't any evidence that life had begun nor a mandate from God there. The references to the womb found there could be argued to assume that there is a life there, but they could also simply relect the prophetic nature of God--and since it is obvious (from the same verses) that he knew about the child even before conception is evident, so I do not believe that this was meant to be the line that divides life and potential life.

the abortion thing I don't believe would be found anywhere in the bible..however I believe as far as church people go believing abortion is wrong would have to do with the basic principal that killing another life is wrong, and since most church people fully believe life begins at the second of conception then abortion to them is wrong.

as far as homosexuality there are places in the bible that say it is wrong.

I am not saying I agree with any of these churchy views just saying the bible does back them up.

In the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill" - simple enough answer!

Homosexuality IS a sin and there are many passages in the bible that say it's forbidden and an abomination - immoral.

Romans 1:26-27 - For this cause od gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27- And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

2 Peter 2:6 - And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly:

1 Timothy 1:9-10 - Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 - For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine.

Wow, either you are being VERY sarcastic or you have never cracked the Bible....

Per your first point
"1 Corinthians 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 ...... will inherit the kingdom of God."
One of many passages about homosexuality

Per your second point, the word "abortion" is not used, but the Bible speaks of the sin of murder, and defines human life as being in the womb

Exodus 21:22 "If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life,

*****

Not so much a "publisher date" as a translation version - the NKJV, NASB, ESB all use this word

Psalms 139:13-16 David said For you yourself (God) produced my kidneys You kept me screened off in the belly of my mother.I shall laud you because in a fear-inspiring way I am wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, As my soul is very well aware. My bones were not hidden from you
When I was made in secret, When I was woven in the lowest parts of the earth.Your eyes saw even the embryo of me,
And in your book all its parts were down in writing,
As regards the days when they were formed
And there was not yet one among them..As you can see Jehovah God takes note of an embryo, the very earliest stages of pregnancys. Ps.36:9 With you are the sources of life. Acts 17:28 By him (God) we have life and move and live.
Romans 14:12 shows that each of us will have to render an account to God for our actions. Lastly Ex 21: 22-24  “And in case men should struggle with each other and they really hurt a pregnant woman and her children do come out but no fatal accident occurs, he is to have damages imposed upon him without fail according to what the owner of the woman may lay upon him; and he must give it through the justices. But if a fatal accident should occur, then you must give soul for soul,  branding for branding, wound for wound, blow for blow. So even thouth the Bible might not use the words abortion specifictly, we get the point, thou shall not kill.
