in Mexico moral values are very traditional. Family is valued over education and individual success. Values are what many Americans would consider sexist. "Machismo" is a big factor, it is expressed in many ways in their society. Marriage for girls age 14-18 is normal. if you are older than 30 a woman and still unmarried, people will think there is something really wrong with you. If you are in your 20s or 30s and still live with your parents, that is normal. If you are a single woman living alone people will think you are a whore. A lot of married men have affairs or go to prostitutes and that is normal. But if a married woman is found in adultery her husband might shoot her or beat her up. Virginity is highly regarded in young girls, so families are very protective of their daughters. There are higher rates of rape and domestic violence, generally speaking. They do not believe in abortion and many do not believe in using birth control, so families are generally bigger than in the US. They are more religious (Catholic). Even though they love their children and families will have many children, what we could consider "child abuse" (spanking, whipping) is acceptable punishment in Mexico. Also they have a different attitude about animals..what many in the US would consider "animal abuse" is common acceptable behavior there. Also Mexicans can be very harsh when it comes to single mothers, gays, interracial couples, and foreigners (from central america). But then, all of these things I have just said apply to some more traditional pockets of the US also!
also people value hard work and look down on lazies.. however they also have disdain for their govt. which they consider to be corrupt...so do they do not think it is a big deal to cheat the govt. but corruption is widespread in Mexico, even people who consider themselves honest will demand or pay "la mordida" at the appropriate time...

They come here to take what they can get those are their moral values.
Sara B,
Respectfully...You make it sound so nice in Mexico and I've been there many times myself. Mexico is the MOST CORRUPT country I've ever been to. I've been to Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, Eastern Europe before the wall came down and a number of Banana Republics...
Mexico hands down is the most horrifically dark and corrupt country on the face of the earth. Try driving across the Yucatan or down the Pacific coast...The government preys on the people and has for 400 years. They drive their slaves northward so that they can export their diseases and poverty to the US. They want the $26 Billion a year they send home.
If our corrupt government actually cared about Americans or thte Mexican people they'd close the borders and deport all the illegals they could catch. The returning Mexicans (who are owed nothing by the US) would probably plunge the country of Mexico into political turmoil and unless that happens things there will remain pretty dark.
Sorry I have been there too much to buy your happy romantic fable.

yes. Definitely. Even though Mexico IS part of AMERICA, these two countries(Mexico and U.S.A) were colonized by different cultures. Even native groups, before colonizers came to America, were different. So, of course moral values are different.

Moral values are prominent characteristics in only a handful of individuals. Mostly people who live what they preach. If you apply the term widely to anybody than I would have to say no, there aren't any differences. Just look at Vicente Fox and George Bush.

Generally, yes, but I'm not so sure if you compare it by income class. They apparently have 40 % tax dodgers there, for example, which is incredible next to our negligible income tax evasion rate. People apparently think it is ok to 'scam' electricity from a power line, and that lying to get benefits is clever.
That isn't universal, any more than our poor here think it is ok to steal and lie, universally. My grandparents were poor and it meant my grandmother made my mother's clothes, had a vegetable garden that really contributed, and baked bread and made jam etc. She would have starved rather than steal, but created a network of others like her none of whom would have let the others starve. (They sewed quilts in groups to sell to help eachother out, etc.)
Poverty doesn't equal dishonesty, but where there is more poverty you will find more crime, as a general correlation.

Depends on the level. The ones that are crossing the boarders illegally are mostly in the poverty level of the society in Mexico. The values are different but it doesn't mean that its bad. Crossing the border illegally is bad but I guess that self preservation is more important. Also, there are criminals from there that come here so that does not help. As far as the rich ones, they are probably more like us or better yet more classy unless you are also one of the social elites here in the US. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, they are very, very different.
I facilitate a class in positive parenting at the jail, for an immigrant group (in SPanish), and, for whomever at my center. One of the chapters we discuss is "values". I have the families circle from a list of 100 the top 10 values they would like their children to have, then star the 3 most important. The Spanish group almost always focuses on hygiene, clean homes, and, religion. The group in prison emphasizes following laws, etc. And, the "general" voluntary group varies, but, tends to place importance on education and being kind and loving.
Living in Mexico, I can tell you, yes, the values are very different. The beliefs are very different.
I hate to say it like this, but, their values remind me of what our values were a couple generations ago: importance of family and religion, women being "lesser" than men, ideas of what constitutes a man, the sin of a woman having sex without marriage, etc.

Moral values depend on the culture whatever that culture is. Since the cultural factor is different I would say yes.
Every culture has it "good and bad" points
