when my oldest son was about 5 ... we had been to his aunts for Christmas... his aunt and uncle both had terrific jobs ... so there was a huge pile of presents for there three kids... They went way over board..... when we got home my son went straight to his room and was sitting there crying ..... when I ask what was wrong ..... this 5 year old said "it doesn't matter that Santa liked aunt Sarah's kids more than he likes me ... I don't care " I told him ..... that Santa use to be a real person ..... but nothing lives for ever .. now Santa a spirit of Christmas ... we are all Santa... every year we all get the chance to play Santa .... we all do all we can to make Christmas as nice as we can for those we love.... so the fact that those kids got more presents has nothing to do with whether Santa loves them more it has to do with I don't have as much money as aunt Sarah... but you can only know the truth about Santa when you are old enough to play Santa are you going to help me play Santa next year .... he was thrilled to help ....the rest of my kids never believed in Santa as any more than this great spirit of Christmas... they never told little kids because it was a big kids secret.... every year they took great pride in playing Santa...

the best part is playing Santa for strangers in need..

I have been through this, before my oldest passed away I told her the truth about Santa and her reaction was priceless " You Mean that was all you?!" she exclaimed happily.

My middle child wasn't so gracious to me, she was quite disappointed at first, but has come to accept the idea and insisted I tell her little sister the truth instead of lying to her "Like you lied to me" .....OUCH!!, that didn't go as planned.

I did tell my youngest who was five at the time and I explained to her about Jesus's birthday and that's why we celebrate it, I also told her about St. Nick and all the good he did and that we carry on his works and she was like..."oh, OK".
Then some old lady asked her if she was ready for Santa to come and she responded, "Santa is dead, we do his work for him."

So it's a flip of the coin whether or not you tell your kids, but honestly ever since I got it out in the open, I feel so much better, in the past if you even mentioned Santa coming I felt like a liar. I don't want to lie to them and they are very accepting of the truth, even if it takes a couple of days to get use to.

Now they know it's mom and dad...not that they respect our budget, but they know and they are happy and excited about Christmas still and it makes me feel a little better too because Santa use to get all the credit for those expensive gifts...and now we get the thanks and appreciation. Thank God for that.

tell him Jesus is the true celebrity of Christmas....not santa...he is old enough to learn the truth about the season rather than believe in a childish version of a make believe man who knows all and brings him material goods for appropriate behavior.

We always told our daughter the Truth about God and Jesus, and pointed out that while some people like to talk about santa clause, he is only for fun and pretend.

The REAL santa clause (saint Nicholaus?) was a man who lived generations ago, and he DID give gifts - he gave gold coins to his poor neighbors to help them with their financial struggles.

My daughter asked me and I just flipped the question into telling her that there's nothing that *everyone* believes in. I said, "Some people believe in Santa, and some don't. Some people believe in god, and some don't. That's a decision you have to make for yourself. If I tell you what I believe, then you might make your decision based on me...and it needs to be made based on what *you* believe."

I'd never tell a kid that Santa exists. You're just building him up on a lie that will eventually fall apart.

I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I discovered that he and my mother had identical handwriting...

It didn't ruin christmas for me....just changed it....I never told my parents I knew....they told me first....

They say that when you child is asking, it is probably time to tell them the truth. Of course many theists never tell their children the truth about God, so they just continue believing in him.
