These icons indicate what is starting or booting up when Windows starts. If there are too many programs and utilities that start with Windows, it can slow your system and will definitely slow down the bootup process.
To control what starts with Windows:
Click Start and then Run. (Vista – Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run). In the run box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and then hit "Enter". This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click the "Startup" tab. Now remove the check mark from any and all programs that you do not want to start or "boot" with Windows. Now click apply and then click OK.
You will need to restart your system. When the system starts you will see a box stating that you used the Config. utility, put a check in "Don't show this box at startup".
That should do it.
Do not remove any check marks from your security software. You want it to load with your operating system.

Those Icons are running programs. If you click them they should at least tell you what they are. Then you'll need to go to Add/Remove programs in the control panel or use a program like CCleaner, to uninstall the program. Things like messenger programs, limewire, and anti-virus programs will show up there and you may not want to uninstall them. you should be able to right-click the icon and close/exit the program and see how it affects things before uninstalling.

Some can be gotten rid of by clicking on the icon and changing the start up preferences of the program. Some of them have to be removed in the registry, if you are inexperienced, I don't recommend hacking the registry.

Most of them are just running applications such as internet explorer, or windows live messenger. All you have to do is to right-click them and click exit, or just close the program from the windows task manager. If they automatically appear when you start up the computer when you don't even need them often, just turn off the "start at windows" option that most applications(such as windows live messenger) have. =)
