My 6 and 4 year old girls want to make their own Christmas presents for family this year. Does anyone have cheap, simple enough ideas that would be perfect for this age?

Just saw this in Family Fun this month: http://jas.familyfun.go.com/crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=11893

You'd have to help them with it, obviously.

Also, on that same website, if you click on 'Crafts By Age' & choose 4-5 year olds, you get this list...

Chewy & Louie

CRAFT MATERIALS:
Toothpicks
2 small white gumdrops
2 large white gumdrops
2 orange jelly beans, halved
Royal icing
2 purple Necco wafers, halved
2 orange M&M's, halved
Scissors
Black shoestring licorice

Time needed: Under 1 Hour
1. To make each penguin, use a toothpick to attach the small gumdrop (the penguin's head) on top of the large one (the body). Snap a toothpick in half and use the same technique to attach the jelly bean halves to the penguin's body as feet.

2. Using small dabs of royal icing, glue the Necco wafer halves in place as wings and the M&M half as a beak.

3. Snip off two tiny lengths of shoestring licorice and affix them with royal icing to make the eyes.

Baby-Sock Snowmen

CRAFT MATERIALS:
White baby sock
Batting
String
Fabric or ribbon
Colored baby sock (makes two hats)
Glue
Buttons
Permanent markers
Orange pipe cleaner (nose)
Any color pipe cleaner (earmuffs)
2 mini pompons

Time needed: Under 1 Hour
1. Fill the foot of a white baby sock with batting. Tie shut just above the ankle with string. Trim off the cuff.

2. Divide the sock ball into body and head by tying a strip of fabric or ribbon (the scarf) around the sock.

3. To make the hat, gather the colored sock together at the ankle and tie with string. Leave enough string for a hanging loop. Cut off the foot. Roll up the edge of the sock like a stocking cap. Glue or sew on the hat.

4. Next, glue or sew on buttons. Draw on the eyes and mouth with markers. Cut a 1-inch piece of pipe cleaner and poke it in for the nose. For earmuffs, wrap a piece of pipe cleaner around the head and tuck the ends under the hat rim. Glue on pompons.

Tips:
Don't have batting? Use old nylon stockings or cotton

The absolute best way to turn him on is to surprise him. Make the move on him in an unusual location or setting. Break any scheduling habits you may have also. The more you talk about it, he will probably grow uncomfortable. If you play the feminist point of view...He is not going to go for it.

in past years i've had the kids

-- paint wooden picture frames i got from a craft store;

-- paint plates and other pottery (check in your community; unless you live in a small town there's a good chance you have a similar place where you buy the pottery and your kids get to stay and paint it; then they fire it and you take it home);

-- decorate teeshirts with fabric paints

-- decorate wooden christmas ornaments (also from a craft store)

you might also consider letting them paint a wooden birdhouse, if it's something the recipient might like....
have fun

my son is making food jars this year. You fill a mason jar with all the dry ingredients to make brownies(or whatever you like). Write down the directions and there you go.
