Well today is a good day. Why you ask ? Because many
of you who claim not to believe, seems that the influence
of religion is almost undeniable, even to the most skeptical
of skeptics. Now I realized there are some smart people
on this panel. And some of you may already know these
things. But some don't. So here goes..... I see that some
of you folks don't like saying Christmas with a C. And would
rather use it with an X instead. But the word for Christ in
Greek, is "Xristos", and is a common symbol for it. During
the dark ages, Christian celebrations were banned in
several countries, at different times. Using the word
Xmas, was a way for people to honor Christmas, when
they were not allowed to say or write the word. So why
do you Atheists, use that letter, if you do not believe in
The Almighty ? How about not saying it at all ? :)

Is this not hypocrisy ? The word says
what it means. So you obviously
do believe. :)

lol - people use the spelling Xmas because its an abbreviation. Its in the dictionary as an appropriate abbreviation for Christmas. Many Atheists, people of other faiths, and agnostics celebrate their own version of christmas, which has nothing to do with religion, but we still call it a religious name because that is how everyone knows it and it has been drummed into us through school and commerce.

Its can be likened to our Bank Holidays - its not really a banking holiday anymore is it? - you can still bank online and through telephones and I'm pretty sure that it wont be long before banks do open on these days.

The christmas celebration was actually stolen from a Pagan festivity so celebrations on that day have taken place for hundreds of years before the christian faith took hold.

Why should those who dont believe in god not be entitled to a holiday and celebration of family and friends?

The Greek letter Chi looks like 'X' but is pronounced 'Ch.' So the word is Christos.

btw-the Christ Mass did not come into common practice until Christianity was well established. The whole 'way to honor Christmas when it wasn't allowed' is just myth and legend.

Xmas ... Christmas....
whatever you call it
the countries give public holidays at these times
people are off work whether they want to be or not ...
they have families that celebrate ...
they have other valid reasons for celebrating
and I am sure that the vast majority of Atheists understand full well the meaning of Christmas/Xmas

you go celebrate in your own way and dont let what others do concern you so much

I don't use 'Xmas', typically, because I find it aesthetically displeasing. I can't think of a native word that has that letter combination 'x-m'.

I don't know if you've noticed, but there's a secular holiday out there called 'Christmas' that's all about gifts, corny music, food, and family. That one can be the 'Xmas' for all I care, or call the religious celebration timed to land on the same date 'Xmas' for all I care.

Christmas/ Xmas whatever is celebrated as a secular holiday. You may celebrate it as a Christian holiday - a celebration of the birth of Christ, but I celebrate it as a family tradition where we put up a tree and lights and sing holiday songs and give gifts.

Uh, I used to avoid using the words "Xian" and "Xmas" out of respect for your religion and thought that it was a bit tacky. However, I did run across where these forms came from quite awhile ago, so now I have no worries about using them - except that many Xians have no clue about them being Xian terms.

It's strange how words, their meanings and usage, evolved across time, just like everything else.

Christmas is the name of the holiday, whether a person is a Christian or not. I feel no more hypocritical saying Christmas than I do saying that I'm 'Hoovering' even though I'm using a Dyson.

WHAT. Christmas has got nothing to do with christianity. the early church moved the celebration of jesus' birthday on to the same day as a pre-existing pagan festival because no one was interesting in celebrating Jesus' birthday. So what is the point you are actually trying to prove.

Christmas is a Federal Holiday, and is owned now by the US taxpayers. It doesn't matter how it is spelled.

This is what happens when you try to turn your secular country into a theocracy - your religious celebrations get co-opted and watered down. I guess Christianity had it coming, as they co-opted and watered down Saturnalia so many years ago.
