Please help guys. I bought a Range Rover on internet. It has been about 2 months. It has had issues here & there. the seller (in another state) has been very hateful when asked about the flaws he omitted when he listed it. WELL, now I found out that the car which shows 61,000 miles on the odometer is actually documented by the dealership as having 113,000. miles on it!!! I have contacted DMV, his local police, my finance company & gotten nowhere! How do I get my money back??? The car is falling apart!

Thanks for all the info. I actually still have the title. He obviously got a new one because it is from Aug 07. I did do a carfax. It was actually a dealership that had done service on it that I called (found a receipt) they ran the VIN & had a whole file on it. They confirmed the mileage was NOT what was claimed. They sent me all the paperwork from the last 5 years! Showing mileage increase each time. I know the guy who sold it DID IT because HE was the owner who got the "new title" he does work under a "Company" name. He lives in Florida. I am out of state. Do I get an attorney here or there? I spoke with him (recorded-this is legal as long as 1 party knows) he said YOU HAVE NO PROOF & I am not giving you any $ back & emailed me this AM & said I have a vivid imagination & that his uncle is an attorney & will cost him nothing...etc.
I called his local Police Dept. & they said since it was online I had to do something else!? He checked the box saying the miles were accurate.

Contact the Attorney General of your state and explain the situation to them. And a note to "crash".......Don't post the entire text of a policy. Just the portion that applies.

How old is the vehicle? Did the seller sign a federal odometer mileage statement saying that the miles were correct? Did you have a title history search done prior to your bidding on the vehicle?
Federal law requires that sellers certify the mileage reading and state that it is correct or incorrect at time of sale, on vehicles 9 years old or newer! Than means that if the vehicle was a 1997 model year or older, it is exempt from federal laws!
Your finance company does not have anything to do with the condition of the vehicle, you borrowed money and they want you to repay as agreed!
Look closely at the paperwork from the purchase. You may need to go to DMV and get a title history, if you did not keep a copy of the title! Was the mileage certified as correct, or was the box saying "not actual miles" checked? Was a mileage number filled in, or was the word "exempt" there?
I assume that you bought the car from the owner on the title, or a dealer, rather than from someone who did not have the title in their name! If you bought the car with an open title, you have no recourse!
Good luck!

State laws are different for each state. Was this car purchased locally on e-bay? Was this an individual or a dealer selling the car? Either way consult an attorney, yes it will cost you some money, but so will that yuppy Ranger Rover. Also notify e-bay, they probably won't help you get your money back but they will stop him from selling on e-bay.The last rule if you can't check out the car yourself hire someone to do it. Also use carfax reports.

Contact the DMV. The title transfer has an odometer disclosure statement that is a legaly binding signature line. If they knowlingly sold it with a wrong odometer reading, the DMV may be able to help. At the very least threatening them with criminal charges vs. civil charges may open thier eyes.

As much as I hate our litigation happy society, talk to a lawyer. Messing with an odometer is not legal and you might have a case here.

How do you know he tampered with the mileage? He could have bought it that way. you should have checked things out a little more thoroughly before buying a vehicle over the internet (hello! Big red flag!).

Well, you can't get your money back, unless you resell the car. Buyer beware, sorry.

It is illegal. Contact the DMV and a lawyer, and tell him you are.
