You might want to rephrase your question, but if I understand you correctly, I'd say that following religion blindly, without any thought or "self realization" would not be all that helpful for a soul. However, some psychologists say that acting in a certain way will help one feel the way one is acting--e.g. smiling a lot can make you a happier person. I guess it is possible for something like that to happen in spiritual matters.

Most of the religions are set that way where it takes you away from yourself, the mind set of most of the religions people are that, they live in a make belief mind as having God in front like a father figure demanding rules to follow and if you dont you go to hell, but i love you, ( very conflicting message), And people in real life have to live under authority, hence in real and in imagination they are so absorbed in fulfilling everyones demands that the real self is lost, if you talk to religions people you will find they are so messed up within and they live a miserable life of unhappiness, depression, and hatred, my question is "How can you realize god if you have not realized yourself, because in realizing yourself lies all the answers to god, to understand the far you have to anwer the questions of the near. This is exactly what the eastern philosophies teach.

The real question is that man will follow something...he/she will have to make decision...our world is set up that way...decisions have consequences...you can and may eliminate the consequence but you will believe, follow or even led something...and whatever you decide to follow...the other side will be wrong...
