It's the usual rubbish about being part of their "religion" - somewhere in the Bible it says this and that and they have to blindly obey it. Clever, isn't it ! ! !

The Bible says blood should not be eaten with the flesh of an animal but should instead be poured back onto the earth. I can see a reason for this, because it would fertilise the soil. Jehovah's Witnesses see this verse as meaning that blood should not be used for any other purpose. Whereas i don't agree with this entirely, i do agree that blood transfusions could sometimes be replaced by other methods which would mean fewer foreign antigens for the body to deal with after having lost blood. It is a little like having an organ transplant, which isn't something to be taken lightly.

It is possible to be one's own blood bank. I don't know what they think about that.

There is an obscure OT verse that says that the Hebrews should not partake (eat or drink) of blood, and that blood spilled should be allowed to soak into the earth.

They extrapolate this to mean that no one should allow blood to enter their bodies, at all, under any circumstances. If that means allowing an infant to die, well, that's fine by them!

Like most Xtian cults, they have abstracted odd fragments of the bible to take literally, and ignored the bits that contradict the bit they want to use as dogma!

With the blood taboo, this has had tragic consequences, but sometimes the results were hilarious. In their watchtower magazine, back in the 40's and 50's, you can follow some real howlers that JWs would rather you didn't know - for example, that Aluminium is the metal of the Devil, that in their 'New System' faithful black people would be turned white by god, and that the prophets would all be raised and live in a mansion in California!
They don't admit to that sort of lunacy - but alas it's all out there is their own publications!

I used to know a few Witnesses.

They explained that it has to do with drinking blood, and how blood represents the Life of Christ. To support their logic against whole-blood transfusions, they point at conditions such as AIDs- since one way it is transmitted is through blood.

Personally, I think their reasoning is off, if the blood is never exposed to air and is free of contaminants. But while I think a lot of Witnesses are full of bullhockey (They do the very things they say one shouldn't do), I can see where they just might have a point.

Under some circumstances, some Witnesses will permit transfusions of certain blood by-products.

The Bible does mention to abstain from blood... I know you couldn't eat it. Now what exactly does that mean is still somewhat mysterious to me. I see there point....Being a Christian means to give up some personal freedom's why do people bash a religon that its foundation require to abstain from some personal freedoms. I find JW theology impressive and there adherents somewhat cold to a certain extent. Im still researching this blood topic....

Wont help but you need to do your own research.

Jehovah witnesses believe that blood is symbolic of the gift of life from god and god asked that blood should only be pured back into the ground. Gifts are not usually something that should be given away. I myself was bought up in this religion but have broken free from its clutches and became a individual with a opinion!!! ITs A CULT and does brainwash its members robbing them of any individuality and freedom of thought.
I hope this answers that
