#Smart-sensors are those devices in which the sensors and circuits co-exist, and their relationship with each other and with higher-level processing layers goes beyond the meaning of transduction. Smart-sensors are information sensors, not transducers and signal processing elements. Smart sensors are not general purpose devices. Everything in a smart sensor is specificly designed for the application targeted for.
#Buildings, which use about one-third of all energy consumed in the state and nation, could be outfitted with tens of thousands of tiny sensors, all tied into a central computer that would regulate energy usage.
#During peak hours of energy consumption, air conditioners, ventilating systems, lights and computer networks would be automatically shut off, then turned on again when the demand had subsided.

Once buildings have a bit of brains,Passive sensors will be designed to perform more intelligently. The next generation of smart dust motes could be sophisticated enough to cut power automatically to certain building systems during specific times of the day.

-[Winix PlasmaWave™ Air Cleaners or, air purifiers, are equipped with Digital Smart Sensors that automatically monitor air quality in your room. As air pollutant level increases, fan speeds will adjust automatically – True “SET-and-Forget” operation!

Dust and Odor Sensors:
Automatically detect the presence of dust and odor in the air and adjust fan speed accordingly. It will stop working when dust and odor are removed.

Light Sensor:
When the room is darkened, automatically activates Sleep mode to ensure continuosly quiet and energy-efficient operation. It changes its mode back to normal Auto mode in case of the presensce of light.

A smart sensor is where a transducer and the associated processing electronics are built on the same chip of silicon.

I fail to see how this greatly impacts the energy though.

A sensor that is built into electrical items - eg - TV's - it senses periods of inactivity/standby and after a set period the detector powers off the instrument.

Light Smart sensors - built into some light devices - switches light off after period of inactivity and/or switches light on with movement detection.

Both saving electricity/power

In our office the lights are turned on by motion sensors. So if the office is empty the lights turn off.
