Generically, crosscountry skiing, followed by running will burn the most calories per hour of activity.

However, the answer for you depends on your current physical condition and objectives. As LV points out, high intensity efforts can elevate metabolic rates for some hours post-exercise.

For a one time effort, workout time limited to less than 1 hour, with calorie expenditures measured for 24 hours, I would pick my Tuesday night track workouts, which would agree with LV. If I had to burn maximum calories over a 24 hour period, or better yet, a week, I would unquestionably go with a combination of long slow distance running and cycling, simply because, as a trained Ironman, I could (and have!) put forth a significant effort for a high percentage of that 24 hours, while high intensity efforts are self limiting. You can only do so many 100's before the knee or achilles lets go, and you can't (or shouldn't) do high intensity day in and day out.

If you are new to fitness, and not really in that good of shape, the answer is pay attention to your diet until you are fit enough to burn a significant number of calories via exercise. Most beginners are not physically able to do enough to have an immediate and significant impact on weight.

As you work your way up to fit, any athlete will tell you that a combination of activities works best. You need endurance workouts to train your cardiovascular system. You need sprints and tempo work to drive your aerobic threshold closer to max, and you need resistance exercise for strength. How much time you spend on each is determined by your athletic objectives. All of these, together, significantly improve your ability to mobilize fat reserves, and "burn calories" as needed.

burning calories during exercise is severely overrated. the goal should be to perform sufficient exercise at a high enough level of intensity so that the metabolic rate will remain elevated for hours after exercise. this is where real fat burning takes place not during the actual exercise session. hands down training at maximum effort is best for this. so if you are heart healthy performing sprints several times a week will definetly excite your metabolism, combined with a low calorie diet of whole foods you can lose some serious body fat in a relatively short amount of time. something like sprint 100 m then walk 100 m then sprint again, etc. keep this up for 10-15 minutes and stretch thoroughly after for 15-20 minutes.

Sprinting. Also if you do weight/resistance training, the muscle you build burns calories even while you are at rest.
