no. the CG does NOT pay off any debts whatsoever. In fact, they may not even offer college loan repayment. additionally, the CG does NOT give out any type of enlistment bonus so he couldn't even use that. excessive debt can actually keep him from being able to enlist period.

I have never heard of such a program. Seems like he may be confusing some things. He may be getting an enlistment bonus of some kind that HE can apply towards paying off his credit cards but as far as I know the only thing the government offers as payoff programs is student loans if the person qualifies for such a program in the first place. If he has been offered an enlistment bonus he will not get a penny of that for numerous months until he has 100% completed CG boot camp AND his follow on school after that.

I'm not sure if the Coast Guard has some kind of special program, but most military service does not do that specifically. There is The Soldier and Sailor Act, which freezes the interest, but (as far as I know, I'm not claiming to know everything) there is no military program that will pay off your credit cards or erase your debt.

His credit will have a lot to do with what he can do while in the Coast Guard. People with high debt or who just don't pay their bills are considered a security risk because they are more "bribeable" (doubt that is a real word!). So it would have an impact on promotions. He needs to get his behavior straight and quit using credit cards if he can't pay for them.

um...yeah, the coast guard and other military branches aren't in any way concerned about your sons credit history. mainly because of the age that most people join. i mean honestly, how much could your son be in debt. and no, they don't pay off your credit cards. they pay you. you can put the money towards your debt, but its not like they baby you like that. i hope the recruiter didn't tell him this. and good luck to your son, coast guard boot camp is considered one of the most difficult. it sits one below the marines.

No military branch will pay off debts period!!!
The only thing he can do is sign up for automatic payments to be made from his base pay. Once the balances are paid off, then he will receive his full pay.

If it sounds too good to be true......it is Bravo Sierra.
Some professionals, Doctors, Lawyers, can get BIG help with student loans.
He should have started his story with "Once upon a time".
SSG US Army 73-82
Long civilian career around Bankers and Law Enforcement.
Edit: Depending on the amount of debt and his credit score he could be denied work requiring a security clearance.

No they will not pay off credit card debts.
Tell your son to get it in writing or it will not count.
Maybe they offered your son a bonus which he can use to pay them off.

If you consider him taking his paycheck and applying it toward his credit card debt, then yes they do. However, they will not pay a lump sum to his creditors to erase his debts.
