My friend's Canon AE1 has a squeak that can be heard when the shutter is tripped, most of the time. I remember reading that this was a common problem for Canons of that vintage. Is it an easily fixed problem, or is the whole shutter about to totally fail?

It would probably be cheaper to buy a used Canon AE-1, rather than attempt to fix the shutter. I would price AE-1's on eBay, ensure that they don't have problems, and compare that to the price of a shutter repair.

i have an older canon ae1 35mm camera SLR that does that also! if it takes decent pictures (which I haven't tried yet), I'm not going to bother fixing it
