Photography isn't quite like the other visual arts in many aspects and there really are no cult geniuses.

There have been innovators in all areas and some people have made a cult of them and their work, but photography isn't homogenous and, while there may be cross-fertilization between areas, there is no main thrust or focus.

For example, Richard Avedon has been extremely influencial for the areas he deals in, but has zip influence on photojournalism, landscape, or fine art photography.

Diane Arbus would be another example of a very influencial person for a certain type of photography and photographer.

I don't know if there can be someone influencial in photography in the sense I think you mean. Photography is just to big and varied.

Vance

Edit Vienna: I disagree. Influencial, yes, undeniably, but responsible for all photography we see today? No.

Lewis Hine, 1874-1940. Inspired social commentary photography. The list could get very long, but, with universal claims, only one counter example invalidates it.

Aside from the fellow who made the first photograph (he has faded into obscurity), the man who has had the biggest impact on photography is Henri Cartier-Bresson.

He moved photography from the formal, studio-portrait memorialization of kings, generals and rich people, to the recording of everyday life.

Virtually all the photography you see today owes its existence to this man.

And, I'll bet all the other photographers mentioned here would wholeheartedly agree.
