There are certain things an assistant can do and certain things only a dentist can do. Dentists only(and Hygienists) can give injections. Dentists only can pull teeth or take out decay by drilling or reduce tooth structure by drilling. Assistants, depending upon the state, can pack cord, do coronal polishes, make temporaries, even fill a cavity that was prepped by a dentist, all under direction of a dentist, of course.

From what I understand, the assistant is not supposed to be doing surgery type work on the teeth. Pulling a tooth sounds more along the lines of what the dentist is supposed to be doing. I have never worked in a dentist's office so there may be more to the rules than I know about but this one sounds like an assistant playing dentist to me.

Absolutely not. I have a friend who is a dental assistant. They're there to learn (some of them, to become dentists) but at the very least they must ask to touch you. You must give permission.

They're not licensed or certified to do such work. And that is a serious liability and potential malpractice issue.

Get a new dentist! I wouldn't let any untrained unlicensed assistant pull my teeth! It's too much like surgery!
