The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) is a beautiful Christian religion. You should be extremely careful when trying to learn about Mormons from others. There are many who hate the Mormons and spread lies, distortions, and conspiracy theories about them. Others think they understand Mormon doctrine because of "what they've heard," but are actually misinformed.

Because Mormons are Christian, we believe in most of the things that Christians believe, including:

1) Christ is divine and salvation comes only through Him.
2) The Bible is the word of God.
3) Men ought to love one another.

Mormons are a unique branch of Christianity, however. We are neither Catholic nor Protestant, so naturally we have some different beliefs. Most of the differences are minor. One significant difference has to do with the authority to act in God's name. Mormons believe that soon after the death of Christ and His apostles, the early Christian Church was greatly influenced by Greek and Roman philosophies and political pressures. Despite the efforts of many good men and women, the true Church of Christ was eventually lost because of these outside pressures and internal, man-made changes. Mormons believe that God reestablished the original Church of Christ in 1820 through a man named Joseph Smith.

Theologically its different from other religions because they, like other Christians, believe that one is saved through Christ. They are different from other Christian churches because they believe in a modern day prophet; that we existed in heaven with God before we were born; that we may become like God if we're worthy; that Jesus, God the Father, and The Holy Spirit are not the same physical being. There are more, but those are the biggies.

Other differences: The local leaders of each congregation (called "wards") are not paid, they are chosen from members of the congregation to serve for a period of time. They use both mainstream and Mormon hymns in their hymn book. Their buildings are paid for - no outstanding debt (unless this policy has changed). Lessons taught in Sunday School for all ages, including adult, are the same lessons taught world wide; you'll receive the same lesson in New York as you will in Los Angeles so that you'll have continuity if you travel. Mission work is not required but expected; young people and retired people go on mission trips around the world - not that other churches don't do this, but for Mormons, its a large part of their teaching.

Differences in action: Mormons believe in The Word of Wisdom which instructs them not to partake in tobacco, "hot drinks", large meat courses at meals, alcohol, etc... And for the most part, they try to earnestly follow these teachings.

Do people still believe that Mormons are Polygamists?? That is so old and so trite! Its been rebutted SO many times that it makes my eyes bleed every single time I read it somewhere else.
How ironic is it that you don't "allow" Mormons to be Christian because they don't follow the Protestant teachings, but you have no qualms about lumping people that claim to be Mormon into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) even when they don't claim to be part of this organization and the organization doesn't condone their beliefs or behaviors.

Clint - They don't believe that Jesus lived on the Americas during that entire period. That is the period of time that The Book of Mormon claims to document. Christ was only in the Americas after his crusifixion, and only for a brief time.

Father K - "Mormonism is not Christian because it denies some of the essential doctrines of Christianity, including: 1) the deity of Christ, 2) salvation by grace, and 3) the bodily resurrection of Christ."
1) They believe that Christ is God's only begotten son. They don't believe that Christ is God - and neither did many early Christians until the Nicaean Council "decided" that Christ was God.
2) They believe that the only way to be saved is through the grace of Christ - through his sacrifice and attonement.
3) They believe that Christ was resurrected on the third day and came to the Apostles just as it was written in the new testament.

Get your facts straight "father".

They also do not worship Joseph Smith - they worship God and close their prayer in Christ's name.

They believe in everything other christian believe in. BUT - they believe that Joseph Smith was picked to found the church of latter day saints in "America" following the suggestion that "I have sheep that are not of this fold".

They also believe that since man is made in the image of god that no bad chemicals and such should be ingested. Alcohol, drugs, smoking. At one time, like the Jews of old, they were polygamous but that is no longer valid.

There are really few differences. It is an interesting concept. One worth investigating.

They believe that Jesus Christ lived in the Americas from approximately 600 B.C. to A.D. 421 and that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated the Book of Mormon into English by divine inspiration from golden plates and seer stones that he received from the angel Moroni. Of course, the angel took all of the physical evidence with her or him but left him the book to pass on.

Christian
They sing praises to Jesus.
You hear messages from God's word.

Mormon
You sing praises to Joseph Smith and the prophet.
You hear messages that someone was told to give you, not from God's word.

Those were the two biggest for me.

Mormonism is not Christian because it denies some of the essential doctrines of Christianity, including: 1) the deity of Christ, 2) salvation by grace, and 3) the bodily resurrection of Christ.

This is "another Jesus" and "a different Gospel".

Furthermore, Mormon doctrine contradicts the Christian teaching of monotheism and undermines the authority and reliability of the Scriptures and the Church

.In the New Testament book of 2 Corinthians, the apostle Paul warns of "another Jesus whom we have not preached... a different spirit which you have not received... a different gospel which you have not accepted" (2 Cor. 11:4).

In the New Testament book of Galatians, Paul again warns: "But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!" (Gal. 1:8).

Ironically, this latter warning is a nearly exact description of how the Mormon church was founded:
