Hypothetically, there is a guy who is AWOL from the marines, he has been so for several months now. He is not wanted per NCIC and has not been picked up and he is living in his home town. What would be a reason he hasnt he been apprehended yet ??

FYI You can pay for a nationwide background check from the FBI.

If the AWOL person is local to the base, then a 1sg or his own sgt would make the effort to retrieve him.

But if its like more than driving distance away, forget about it.

The best a unit could do is try to contact and urge or even scare the fmily members toforcing the kid to go back to his unit.

Maybe the family is supporting his choice to get out, and when his unit calls they say they havent seen him.

You could try to contact the Marshalls office, and they might do something about it.
Maybe even the local police or sherriff might if you bring it to their attention.

As far as the unit not caring -- thats B.S. since it doesnt look favorably on the chain of command of the unit commanders when someone goes AWOL...tey will stop at nothing if they could to try and get him back.

But distance is a real key element in their choice..

I am also wondering how a plain old civilian would be able to run a warrant check.

Police can get their butt in a sling doing stuff like that under the table.

PS: It's Desertion. He will hypothetical run a red light, apply for a job where a criminal check is done, get married and then divorced, try to register to vote, get called for Jury Duty, try to renew a drivers license.

He will hypothetically be arrested, hypothetically turned over to US Marshall, Marshall will give him to the Branch he deserted, he will be Court Martialed and sentenced to any where from 2 years to life.

Desertion at time of war is a Capitol Offense. There are currently 9 members on Death Row.

They are not going to go looking for him. Time takes care of these things.

The military doesn't spend a lot of resources looking for AWOL people. They're usually more trouble than they're worth. The thinking is, that why should they go looking for a guy just to have to support him in a military prision? Usually, most people that go AWOL come back anyway. (I don't know why this is.)

Has this guy tried to get a job yet? Usually, a red flag will go up if he tries to apply for a legitimate job or gets pulled over for a speeding ticket or something.

Mostly it's because the military doesn't want anything to do with him. If he had not gone AWOL he'd been discharged anyway, which they will eventually get around to doing. He'll end up with a BCD. If he'd not gone AWOL he'd probably ended up with a not fit for military service discharge, which would have looked better on a work application. After Mommy and Daddy kicks him out, he'll be lucky to find a job.

He can never get a job or even a speeding ticket or he'll go to jail. Where we live 55 soldiers went AWOL within one month....the military isn't going to go chasing you all over the world. They wait and then you will eventually get caught and to jail you go. Having said that .... you don't always go to jail. My husband had a soldier that went AWOL twice a few years ago and is still active duty...even been promoted. They didn't go looking for him and eventually he came back! I think what happens to you also depends on circumstances.

First--he isn't a Marine! He might have gone to bootcamp--he might have graduated- he might have went AWOL or he might have been kicked out--but he never REALLY became a Marine. So many don't have the right stuff to commit. It isn't the uniform, it isn't the derog's he conjures up. This is only his defense to cover up the weakness and fear. He knows in his heart that he couldn't cut it. We don't want his kind back. He deserves to live in fear and humilation until they catch him if he is AWOL!! USMC 60-68

The Military doesn't bother sending people to find you. After 30 days he is considered AWOL and if a cop picks him up he'll be arrested, and send back. Actually you should turn him in. He sounds like a turd.

Are you sure that he's AWOL? Perhaps he was kicked out of the Marines?

How did you access NCIC to check his status, local police? Have contacted the FBI, they are the ones who run down deserters since it is a federal offense.........

AWOLs are not a high priority.

If they don't wnat to be in the service that badly, we generally don't want them anyway.

In general, he'll have to do something else stupid to draw attention to himself. He can still demonstrate that he's capable of being a good troop, go back to his unit and throw himself on their mercy. There will be consequences, but unless he's been a no load/slow leak type, they'll take him back.
