I am a retired Border Patrol Agent in good shape but bored. My girlfriend and all my friends still work so I want to come out of retirement. I am active, fairly strong and I feel capable of doing the job. Do you think they will think the same? Thanks, Mud Bug

My husband had a guy in the academy with him that was over 50 . There is another fella at his agency who retired as a corrections officer before going through the academy. As long as you are able to pass all of the PT requirements, you should be fine. Your previous experience should also help. Good luck !!

You most definitely have a chance. I go into sheriff departments all the time and always see older rookies. For one, you're experienced, and two, you're in good shape. Being a Border Patrol Agent, I bet you're bilingual and in any job, that's a BIG plus. Also, any business or department can't descriminate over age.

Good Luck to you!

Sure. I work for a sheriff's dept in LA in the human resources dept. We have hired several older deputies for active duty in my time here. Your age will not be a factor as much as your experience, fitness level, etc. If you are in good shape, who cares how old you are, 50 is the new 40! I think your years of experience and your previous job record will be the most important factor in your favor. The point is, go for it!

I'm sure there's definitely a chance for you since you do have experience and are in good shape. However, we do live in a critical society, and discrimination does take place. Realistically, your age will be a factor, and you will have to try twice as hard to prove yourself than someone half your age. I wish you the best of luck!

I say go for it and don`t listen to the young mans opinion below,at 50 your probably street smart more so than a snot nozed 20 yo,as long as your healthy and in shape and can pass thier physical fitness test.

the problem with overqualification, is that they may think you want too much money. Or the fact that your natural leadership from experiance will undermine the placed athorety.

I'd try to releave their fears,.. unless their fears are just turned into a buerocratic polocy.

Maybe try and show them a humility that says you want to learn? Or try and show them the need to fill time? I'd get some real advice from someone who's been a manager.
