I had very long hair in my teens back in the 60s and I used to iron my hair sandwiched between sheets of brown paper or newspaper. It works perfectly and does not damage the hair as the iron does not actually come into contact with it.
Straighteners hadn't been invented then!

my stepmother used to do that when she was younger. she had long blonde hair that was almost to her waist and every morning my grandmother would iron her hair for her....she actually never burned her hair cuz she was very carful and i dont think she put the iron directly on her hair (pretty sure she put a pillow case over it to keep from frying her hair. if done properly it doesnt cause damage..i dye my hair every 2 weeks and blowdry and straighten it every day and my hair is so soft and healthy that it slides right out of ponytails cuz i take very good care of it and protect it from the heat....good luck and be careful..the smellf of burnt hair is not attractive!! :)

I did, the problem is you can also burn it more easily, just do it every know and then, or buy a hair iron with the money you saved, takes longer but your hair is worded

Anyone who had a hippy for a mother (like me) would know. They would also know that a bit of brown paper over the hair before you iron it would save it from any damage!!

Be careful not to burn it.

Stop! No do not iron your hair. You will burn your hair and your face. An iron is much too hot and certainly NOT made for hair. Use a good ceramic flat iron and some product used for straightening.
I tell you the first time you burn the crap out of your face, you will regret it.

Only if it's long enough to do so, and it's usually done on a lower heat than most hair straighteners have. My mother and granmother used to do this.
