You're lucky - I once (ONCE!) went to a Somerfields and the bloke on the till had a whale of a time trying to get hold of my nice fresh sliced loaf so that he could scan it, and by the time he'd finished with it it was the shape of a bag of sweets, so I sent for the manager and made him personally get me another one to replace the mashed-up one. I thoroughly enjoyed holding up the queue whilst I explained in a loud voice to all and sundry what was going on and to watch their shopping with this particular bloke ! ! !

Ha ha - this made me smile.

Our local Somerfields are exactly the same - the items are practically thrown at you and they never wait for anyone to finish packing - they just start again with the next customer. They also scrunch up all your change and your receipt when they give it to you.

Shame really, cos Somerfield do have some good bargains, but it puts me off going there!

I’d disagree with the first person who’s answered this question; my local Somerfield is a clean, well-stocked shop full of very helpful staff. Also they’re very quick to serve people so you don’t need to wait in unnecessarily long queues. For any other Londonders; I’m talking about the Old Street branch. And no, I haven’t seen the TV advert. I’m sure there are no intended “morals” in it.

My local Somerfield (Calne, Wiltshire) is a breath of fresh air! Yes, the staff (mainly older) do move at a more leisurely pace, but are so much more friendly and helpful compared with the morons (mainly younger) working in the adjacent opposition supermarket.
HOWEVER, the Somerfield in Wootton Bassett (next town), is a disaster with mainly young staff badly organised and badly trained.
I suppose it's all down to the individual manager and his/her hiring policy.

Haven't noticed this in the ad, but I agree that staff at Somerfield can be dead slow and stop. They have they nearest supermarket to me - within walking distance, but I only use it for top up shopping. Whilst the individual checkout operators are lovely, they are badly managed and I reckon every time I go in to hear 'colleague announcement - till trained staff to the checkouts' The managers must let them lounge in the back of the shop most of the time.

Very true! And the staff at our Somerfield are so rude as well, like they wish you weren't there!! I went this morning and all my shopping was up the other end of the till before the previous lady had moved out of the way with her bags... tut!
