How do you get heat spots off the dinning room table after something hot has been left on it?

I had Thanksgiving dinner at my house and somebody left a hot plate on my dinning room table. Now I have a large white spot on my dinning room table. How do I remove it?

This is not a good thing. What has probably happened is that moisture has been drawn up into the topcoat (Poly, varnish, shellac). The only way I know of to eliminate this is sanding and refinishing. Some people swear by using mayonnaise rubbed on the area. Won't hurt to try it, but doubt it will work.
