What would you have done?

I was a the Flea Market this past weekend, when I watched this man walking his Great Dane. I really like large dogs, even though I only own Shih Tzu pups. Anyway, a couple walks up to him and starts talking to him about his dog. It seems that this man "breeds" Danes. So, I am listening to the conversation, when the man starts pitching selling a 9 month old male puppy. He has this couple hook, line, and sinker.

So, being the "hands-off" type of person I am, I walked over and started petting his dog. I then asked him if he breeds them. (knowing full well he did.) He said yes. I then politely asked what the dog's OFA rating was. He looked at me puzzled and said, "What is OFA, I don't know what that means." I then explained in great detail what it was and was told that he NEVER does that! Needless to say, the couple walked away and didn't buy his puppy. The "breeder" got upset with me! I wonder why? :-)

What would you have done? Was I right to speak up?

OH Katz! How could you be so incredibly mean and hurtful to ask such invasive and obviously confusing questions? I mean it's a FLEA MARKET! They don't need no stinking tests there!

LMAO!

Nice work! Subtle yet effective. You didn't tell them not to buy the puppy. It was their call. I think it's no different than asking if that TV works on every channel.... They got them there at that there flea market don't they?

Well, first of all, a flea market is not the place to buy a puppy. The only place that's worse than that is a "wal-mart" (or other box store) parking lot - or maybe some back alley in a dangerous neighborhood somewhere.

That should have been a clue to the obviously ignorant couple.

But other posters are right - he'll unload his byb pups to some unsuspecting fools.

I wish people like that "breeder" would be spayed and neutered like they should have done to their dogs in the first place.

That was a great way to handle things. I have been in my vets office and this couple brought in a very ill little puppy. The woman started talking about this flea medication she bought from online. I spoke up and asked if she had put that on the puppy, since it was only around 6 weeks old. I then proceeded to tell her that it is toxic to a dog that age. She changed her story and said she did not put it on the pup as the receptionist sat quietly taking it all in!

You know, it seems to me that you did this subtle and didn't come out of the corner swinging. Rather stealthy of you, I like that!

I would have done the same thing and I do at every opportunity. Any time someone is getting a new pup from a breeder, I ask them what the breeder told them about genetic testing of the parents. If they don't know, then I tell them to ask. If the breeder doesn't bother to test, I tell them to run as fast as they can to a better breeder who does test. I see nothing wrong with what you did. He's mad because he lost a sale, but in reality, it's his own fault really. If he were doing things on the up and up, he could have answered your questions and would have been happy to do so.

I would have....I'm sure he'll still be able to sell the pup (9 months old? why is he waiting till now?) to some doofus, but if nothing else, you gave the potential buyer of the minute a little insight....one less person on here in 6 weeks asking what to do about their new puppy with HD, or HOD, or eye problems. My hubby got ticked at me cause I told one of his officers not to buy a boxer pup that he was already "in love" with because e-gads, he was going to buy it from a pet store!

Hysterical! I would have done the same thing!

Perhaps you've educated him as well. Maybe he will get everything checked out before he breeds again.

Wishful thinking.

Either that, or he'll be here on YA in about ten minutes asking us what OFA means and whether or not you are crazy.

BIG :-)

good for you!

Years ago I was perusing classified "pets"...and saw an ad offering a Dobie at stud. I called, pretending I had a female I wanted to breed, asking a lot of questions...like "mine's a red, is it ok to breed her to your b&t?"....."my vet says I should check that the dog I breed to has had his hips checked and checked for that bleeding disorder"....acting pretty naive. End of conversation was that I would call back in a few weeks after they had their dog's tests done,,,,

I know, not nice......

Good job, Kat! I think what you did was done so well....you first walked up and started petting his dog....then started asking questions you knew he wouldn't be able to answer making him look like a breeder who really didn't know his stuff! But...you did it with out jumping in and preaching...just asking questions. I think I will use that strategy if I'm ever in that position! Good going! Thumbs up for you!

LOL Great job Katz! Yes I've done that in my vets office! The person got all red faced and then walked out with her Golden!
My vet was around the corner and she was cracking up too. I just looked at her and said, Was it something "I" said!
Seems the dog had just had some hip x-ray and it was deemed to have mild hip dysplasia! she wanted to breed it anyway. Opps! I guess the truth hurts!

Been there, done that many times. I love to watch the bybs faces when I start explaining OFA, etc...One guy told me he didn't need OFA, his dogs were AKC...Idiot.
