i am getting married in july 2008 and i have a small problem. We are inviting approx 30 people (close family and friends only), the ceremony is going to last only 30 mins, and we are having a dinner, toasts/speeches, cake cutting and dessert reception only. NO DANCING! We have the area for both the ceremony and reception from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. Do you think that the reception is going to be too short? What other things can i do to lengthen the time? Thank you.

If you want to keep it short, then keep it short. No one can force you to have a long reception.

Hi Jilli and congratulations!

I think it sounds perfect! I absolutely LOVE small weddings. Really, I don't think it will be that short.

Your ceremony will be 4:30 to 5 p.m.
Pictures? 5 to 5:30 p.m.
Dinner - 6:00 to 6:30?
Toasts and speaches 6:30 to 6:45?
Cake cutting and serving and eating dessert 6:45 to 7:15?

Then....what about visiting with your guests? Please DO take time to do that.

Here is an idea that I have given others:
~ Have a DVD made of you and your fiance. There are many places that do this. Basically, get a variety of pictures of the two of you from infancy to present time. Someone puts these on a DVD (usually with music playing in the background) and you can show this at the reception. If have been to a few receptions where this was done and is very nice. Possibly after everyone is done eating and maybe before the cake cutting? A little "break" in the action.

Here is one idea that I got from my sister's wedding. (She lived in the UK for a while and it's popular there) ....have a "group photo"....everyone that is there in one picture.

Since you won't have many tables to decorate, my suggestion would be to spend the money and have some beautiful centerpieces. It really doesn't cost a lot to have a few roses and some greens in a vase, set on a mirror with some votives or tealights next to it and then sprinkle a few more rose petals on the table if you want. Elegant, easy, and affordable!

And...if it's over before 8:30 so what? Good luck!

we had a 10 minute ceremony.
and an outdoor lunch time reception.

our wedding started at 11am and it lasted till around 9pm. People went home at their leisure, but most stayed around talking and drinking.

We had music, and no dancing.

We had a slide show at my wedding that people liked. My friends hired a magician, which could be fun entertainment. Have fun with everything!!

Sounds like a decent timeframe.

You could always gather together afterwards at someplace else (bar, etc).

maybe show a slideshow set to music of pictures of you and your fiance growing up and then pics of the two of you together from the start of your relationship until now. my friend did one of these for our friend's weddign and it was wonderful.
